New ‘Harry Potter’ Wands Revealed: HBO Scraps Iconic Movie Props for TV Reboot
HBO isn’t waiting until its Harry Potter reboot premieres to show fans what things will look like.The latest preview offers a look at the new wands created for five recognizable students. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy, and Neville Longbottom will each carry redesigned wands when viewers return to Hogwarts.
The original movie wands became closely tied to these characters. Fans saw them throughout the films, bought replicas, and came to recognize their individual designs. HBO could have recreated those familiar versions, but it chose a new look instead.
Some replacements stay close to what fans remember. Others go in a noticeably different direction.
Harry Potter’s Wand Gets a New Finish
It makes sense to start with Harry.
His famous wand is approximately 28 centimeters long, made from holly, and contains a phoenix feather core. That feather has an important connection to Voldemort because the same phoenix also supplied the feather used inside his wand.
HBO hasn’t thrown away everything viewers recognize about Harry’s design.
The reboot wand maintains a similar shape and coloring, but it appears smoother and more polished than the movie version. That allows Dominic McLaughlin’s Harry to carry something recognizable without giving him a duplicate of Daniel Radcliffe’s wand.
Hermione’s redesign follows a similar strategy.

Hermione Granger Holds Onto a Familiar Feature
Hermione’s wand hasn’t received the complete makeover seen with some of her classmates.
The approximately 27-centimeter wand is made from vine wood and contains a dragon heartstring core. Its twisting, vine-like details remain part of HBO’s design, creating a visual connection to the movie version.
There is still a noticeable difference.
HBO has given the wand a darker finish, helping establish it as a new version rather than a recreation. Arabella Stanton will carry it as Hermione, taking over the character previously played by Emma Watson.
While Hermione keeps some familiarity, Draco’s wand heads further away from the movies.
Draco Malfoy’s New Wand Is Noticeably Lighter
Draco’s redesigned wand has a lighter, creamy-brown appearance.
The approximately 25-centimeter wand is made from hawthorn and contains a unicorn hair core. HBO’s version maintains a clean appearance, but its lighter coloring helps distinguish it from the movie prop associated with Tom Felton.
Lox Pratt will play Draco in the new series, meaning both the actor and wand will introduce audiences to a different version of Harry’s Hogwarts rival.
But HBO goes even further with Ron.
Ron Weasley Gets One of the Biggest Redesigns
Ron begins his Hogwarts story with a hand-me-down.
His first wand previously belonged to his older brother, Charlie Weasley. It is made from ash and contains a unicorn-hair core.
For the reboot, HBO has given that wand a significantly lighter appearance than its movie counterpart. The handle also includes markings and indentations that create a natural, wood-like look.
The differences show that HBO isn’t afraid to move away from imagery fans have known for years.
Neville’s wand takes that approach even further.
Neville Longbottom’s Wand Looks Completely Different
Neville may have the most dramatic redesign of the five.
His new wand resembles a thin tree branch rather than the polished version audiences saw in the movies. The natural appearance makes it immediately stand out from the previous design.
HBO also has more freedom with Neville than it does with some other characters.
Neville initially uses his father’s wand when he arrives at Hogwarts, but its exact length, wood, and core have never been established. That leaves room for the reboot to create its own interpretation.
The result may surprise longtime fans, but it also helps establish HBO’s Wizarding World as something separate from the movies.
A New Harry Potter Cast Arrives December 25
The redesigned wands are only one piece of HBO’s larger Harry Potter reboot.
The series premieres December 25, 2026, with an eight-episode first season adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry, Alastair Stout plays Ron, and Arabella Stanton takes on Hermione. Lox Pratt portrays Draco, while Rory Wilmot plays Neville.
John Lithgow joins them as Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
HBO Is Taking a Risk With Familiar Designs
HBO was always going to face comparisons with the original Harry Potter movies.
Those films gave fans a visual version of the Wizarding World that remained recognizable for decades. The wands became part of that identity.
Now HBO is asking audiences to accept new versions.
Harry and Hermione still carry traces of the movie designs, while Ron, Draco, and Neville move further away.
Whether those changes become as recognizable as the originals will take time. But before the reboot premieres, HBO has made it clear that this new Hogwarts will have its own look.
