‘Harry Potter’ Replaces ‘Half Blood Prince’ With New Version Ahead of HBO Series
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is about to look very different.
The Wizarding World is heading into one of its biggest periods of change since the original film series ended in 2011, with HBO preparing to introduce a new Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Hogwarts, and practically everything – and everyone – surrounding them.
That begins with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day. The eight-episode first season stars Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton as Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and, like the book, will follow the trio as they try to solve a mystery surrounding the stone created by Nicolas Flamel.
Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner, while Succession director Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes. HBO has positioned the project as a more faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novels, with the TV format already restoring material absent from the movies.
Before that new era officially begins, however, another chapter of Harry Potter is getting a major makeover.
A New Look for Harry Potter’s Sixth Year
A brand new illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will be published worldwide on October 6, 2026, giving the sixth novel its biggest visual overhaul in years.
Originally published in 2005, Half-Blood Prince follows Harry during his sixth year at Hogwarts as Voldemort’s power grows. Dumbledore begins showing Harry memories from Tom Riddle’s past, revealing the path that eventually transformed him into Lord Voldemort.
At the same time, Draco Malfoy receives a dangerous assignment from Voldemort, while Harry becomes fascinated by a mysterious old Potions textbook belonging to someone who identifies himself only as the Half-Blood Prince.
The new edition is illustrated by British artist Levi Pinfold, who replaces Jim Kay after Kay illustrated the first five books in Bloomsbury’s illustrated Harry Potter collection.
Kay stepped away from the project following Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to focus on his mental health. Pinfold was subsequently commissioned to complete both Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
The change means Half-Blood Prince will have a noticeably different visual identity from the previous five editions.
Pinfold’s cover depicts Harry and Dumbledore during the novel’s pivotal cave sequence, surrounded by fire as Inferi close in around them. Other artwork depicts Spinner’s End, Katie Bell and the cursed necklace, the Burrow, the Pensieve, and Hogwarts.

Several characters will also appear in this illustrated series for the first time, including Horace Slughorn and Narcissa Malfoy.
The 432-page hardback will launch simultaneously through Bloomsbury and Scholastic, meaning American readers will receive the new edition on the same day. The illustrated collection has sold nearly one million copies and been translated into 38 languages.
A separate Deluxe Illustrated Slipcase Edition follows on November 3, featuring gilt-edged pages, cloth binding, and an exclusive art print.
HBO Could Eventually Give ‘Half-Blood Prince’ Another Makeover
The timing places Pinfold’s interpretation of Half Blood Prince just months before HBO begins retelling the Harry Potter story from scratch.
The 2009 film adaptation, directed by David Yates, notably condensed Rowling’s sixth novel. Much of Voldemort’s family history was removed, including several memories Dumbledore uses to teach Harry how Tom Riddle became Voldemort and created his Horcruxes.
The movie also dropped the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and Dumbledore’s funeral while introducing material not found in the novel, most notably the Death Eater attack on the Burrow.
Harry and Ginny’s relationship was also heavily altered, while the identity of the Half-Blood Prince itself received relatively little attention despite providing the title of both the book and film.
HBO’s longer format creates room to approach those storylines differently if the television series eventually reaches Harry’s sixth year.
There are already signs that the first season is using that extra space. Official previews have confirmed material involving Harry’s Muggle school will appear onscreen, while Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves — a character completely removed from the eight Warner Bros. films.
The publishing side of the franchise is also preparing for HBO’s arrival. A new TV tie-in edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, featuring artwork from the series, will launch on November 3. In the U.S., it will notably use Philosopher’s Stone instead of Sorcerer’s Stone.
That means fans will receive two major new versions of familiar Harry Potter books within weeks of each other.
