HBO Reportedly Scraps Plan for ‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 ‘Chamber of Secrets’
HBO’s Harry Potter series has not yet premiered its first season, but its second is already generating headlines of its own — and not the kind the network was hoping for.
According to new reporting, production on the show’s take on J. K. Rowling’s 1998 novel “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” has been pushed back after Warner Bros. executives reportedly rejected early drafts of the scripts over concerns with plot structure and character work.
Filming on the second season had originally been scheduled to begin in August, but insiders now say cameras will not roll until October at the earliest. A source told The Sun, “Filming for series two was meant to start in August. We had dates to start filming, but the scripts have not been finished… The cost implications are huge.” The same source noted that “many staff are stood down from next week,” leaving crew members without pay during the rewrite period, with some uncertain whether they’ll still be available once production resumes.
The insider went on to explain the holdup in more detail: “The scripts haven’t been signed off, prompting the delay,” adding that “a number of scenes need tweaking because they are not quite right” as “the powers-that-be want everything perfect.”
The delay lands in the middle of a season that has already seen significant behind-the-scenes shakeups. Chief among them is the recasting of Ginny Weasley, arguably the character most affected by the shift from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to Chamber of Secrets. In the source novel, Ginny is pulled into a far larger role than her film counterpart occupied, manipulated by Tom Riddle’s enchanted diary into unwittingly reopening the Chamber of Secrets and ultimately becoming the hostage at the center of Harry’s climactic confrontation with a teenage version of Voldemort.
Gracie Cochrane, who originated the role in Season 1, will not be returning; HBO has offered only “unforeseen circumstances” as an explanation. She has since been replaced by Bonnie Hill, known for Film Club and The Six Triple Eight (2024). Cochrane addressed the change herself, resharing HBO’s announcement on Instagram with the caption “Handing over the wand” and a message of “Good luck” to her successor.
Hill’s arrival is one of three new castings tied specifically to the Chamber of Secrets storyline. Lenny Rush has been brought on to voice Dobby, the house-elf whose chaotic attempts to keep Harry away from Hogwarts drive much of the book’s early plot — a role played by Toby Jones in the 2002 film. Billy Barratt, an International Emmy winner for Responsible Child (2019) with credits in Kraven the Hunter (2024) and Bring Her Back (2025), will portray the teenage incarnation of Tom Riddle.
Season 2 has also parted ways with Nicholas Hoult, who was set to play the vainglorious Professor Gilderoy Lockhart. Kit Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, has stepped in as his replacement.
These moves follow a Season 1 cast list that largely avoided stunt or nostalgia casting, led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult ensemble includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
Timing questions have followed the project even before the reported script troubles. HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys has previously said the franchise will not follow a yearly release pattern. “For some of the bigger shows like Harry Potter or House of the Dragon, or The Last of Us, huge world-building shows, it would be nice to have those on an annual basis,” Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter. “But from a production point of view, it’s just not possible.” That statement already pointed to a 2028 arrival for Season 2 at the earliest; the new production delay raises the possibility of an even later date.
One major casting question remains open regardless of when Season 2 lands: who will play the adult Voldemort? Barratt’s casting covers only the character’s teenage years, and the villain in his fully realized form will not need to be cast until the adaptation reaches Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire — a season that, at the franchise’s current pace, might not arrive until 2032. Speculation has circulated online that Daniel Radcliffe could take on the role, though that idea has drawn skepticism given how closely he remains tied to his original portrayal of Harry.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is set to premiere on HBO in December 2026.
