HBO’s Harry Potter reboot has lost another cast member before its first season has even premiered.
Nicholas Hoult has exited the role of Gilderoy Lockhart in Season 2, less than two weeks after his casting was announced. The Superman star has already been replaced by Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington.
Hoult becomes the second announced performer to leave the series. Gracie Cochrane, who plays Ginny Weasley in Season 1, previously confirmed that she would not return for the show’s second installment.
Nicholas Hoult Drops Out of ‘Harry Potter’
Hoult was announced as Lockhart on August 11.
The character, introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, becomes Harry’s Defense Against the Dark Arts professor during his second year at Hogwarts.
Deadline reported less than two weeks later that Hoult had left the project.
His exit was reportedly unrelated to the wider controversy surrounding JK Rowling or HBO’s decision to reboot the franchise. Instead, scheduling proved to be the issue.
According to Deadline, HBO had already worked around two existing Hoult projects. Changes to the timing of his Season 2 scenes ultimately created a clash that could not be resolved, and Hoult was released from his deal.
Harington has now taken over the role.
The casting marks another major fantasy project for the actor following Game of Thrones. Harington also previously voiced Lockhart in Audible’s Harry Potter audiobook adaptation.
Hoult’s departure follows the earlier exit of Cochrane.

Her family announced that “due to unforeseen circumstances,” she had made the “challenging decision” to leave the reboot after completing Season 1.
They described her experience on the series as “truly wonderful,” while HBO said it supported her decision.
An open casting call to replace Cochrane was issued in July. Ginny becomes considerably more important in Chamber of Secrets, meaning a new actor will take over the role just as the character receives her first major storyline.
Two Roles Are Already Being Recast
The departures mean HBO has already had to replace two actors connected to Season 2 before Season 1 reaches viewers.
That is particularly notable considering the scale of the reboot.
HBO plans to adapt all seven Harry Potter novels across roughly a decade, requiring many of its actors to make unusually long commitments to the franchise.
The production is also working around strict rules governing its child cast. Cinematographer Adriano Goldman has described the restrictions as “brutal,” with young leads Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout reportedly sometimes able to work on set for only around 90 minutes at a time.
HBO is moving quickly through the early books, with production on Seasons 1 and 2 closely scheduled as its young cast grows older.
The series has also faced controversy since it was announced.
Some fans have questioned the need to remake the original films, while casting choices including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid have attracted debate.
Rowling remains an executive producer despite continued backlash over her views on transgender issues.
Lithgow has described accepting the Dumbledore role as a “hard decision,” called Rowling’s views “ironic and inexplicable,” and said people had “insisted” that he walk away.
For now, however, Hoult’s departure appears to be a straightforward scheduling issue rather than another controversy-driven exit.
Season 1 of Harry Potter is scheduled to premiere in December. Its cast also includes Janet McTeer, Katherine Parkinson, Johnny Flynn, Warwick Davis, Bel Powley, Bertie Carvel, and Lox Pratt.
