Disney World Overhauls Transportation: Major Magic Kingdom Option Going Dark in Weeks

Walt Disney World guests have had plenty of transportation updates to keep track of lately.

From new limits involving resort transportation to temporary boat closures, getting around the massive property hasn’t always worked exactly as visitors might expect. Disney has adjusted who can use certain services, while maintenance and major construction projects have created additional disruptions.

Magic Kingdom is about to join that growing list in a much bigger way.

Later this month, Disney will temporarily shut down a familiar attraction that also serves as transportation around the park. It’s another inconvenience for guests, but the timing may make this particular closure more noticeable.

Before that happens, several other transportation updates have already changed how visitors move around Walt Disney World.

Resort Hopping Has New Limits

Disney transportation remains one of the easiest ways to travel around the resort without bringing a car. However, visitors don’t have quite as much flexibility as they once did in certain situations.

One major change involves traveling from Disney Springs to Disney Resort hotels.

Disney now limits that transportation to guests staying at Disney Resort hotels and to visitors with valid dining or experience reservations.

Guests taking buses or water transportation from Disney Springs to the resorts may be asked to provide a valid room key, dining reservation, or experience reservation.

That makes casual resort hopping more difficult for visitors who don’t have a hotel stay or reservation, giving them a reason to make the trip.

And those restrictions haven’t been the only transportation developments this year.

Boats Have Also Been Affected

Maintenance has temporarily disrupted several water transportation options around Disney World.

In August, the FriendShip Boat dock serving Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort temporarily closed for maintenance. That interrupted boat access for guests staying around those hotels.

Another disruption affected the Sassagoula River Cruise. Disney suspended boat service along that route from July 20 through late August while refurbishment work took place. Guests staying at resorts along the route had to find other ways to reach Disney Springs.

Those closures were temporary, but they show how quickly a transportation refurbishment can affect the way visitors navigate Disney World.

Now, a similar situation is coming to Magic Kingdom.

One Magic Kingdom Route Is Already Different

Construction in Frontierland has already changed how guests can use the Walt Disney World Railroad.

Disney continues transforming the area for Piston Peak National Park, and Frontierland Station remains unavailable during that work.

As a result, guests can’t use the railroad the same way they traditionally could.

The train still provides an opportunity to sit down, enjoy the scenery, and travel through part of Magic Kingdom. For guests spending an entire day in the park, it can also provide a welcome break from walking.

But even that modified experience is about to disappear.

Disney will close the entire Walt Disney World Railroad for refurbishment beginning September 28.

Fortunately, the shutdown has a scheduled end date. The railroad is currently expected to reopen on October 30.

That leaves guests without the attraction for most of October.

Halloween Visitors Will Lose an Attraction

The timing makes this closure particularly noticeable because Magic Kingdom is already deep into its Halloween season.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes place on select nights, while other visitors continue taking fall vacations during regular park hours.

Once the railroad closes, all of those guests will have one fewer attraction available.

Regular daytime visitors won’t be able to experience the train at all. Halloween party guests who arrive early will also find it unavailable before the separately ticketed event begins.

There’s also the practical side of losing the railroad.

Magic Kingdom requires plenty of walking, and the train gives visitors a chance to sit down without completely stopping their day. Guests can rest their feet while still experiencing an attraction and moving between available areas.

Frontierland Station’s closure had already reduced that transportation benefit. Beginning September 28, even the remaining railroad experience will disappear temporarily.

The Trains Should Return Before Halloween

Thankfully, guests won’t have to wait indefinitely.

Disney currently plans to reopen the Walt Disney World Railroad on October 30. If that schedule holds, the attraction will return immediately before Halloween and ahead of Disney World’s transition toward the holiday season.

Until then, anyone visiting Magic Kingdom from September 28 through October 29 should expect to do a little more walking.

The railroad may not be the quickest way to cross Magic Kingdom, but speed isn’t its biggest advantage. It combines transportation, sightseeing, and the chance to rest in a single attraction.

For fall visitors already navigating construction and other transportation changes around Disney World, losing that option for a month adds one more adjustment to their vacation plans.
