Last week, we wrote about Disney World’s hotels losing their whimsy.
One resort at a time, the heavy theming continues. Muted colors, clean lines, and a small character silhouette where a mural used to be. It looks fine. It also looks like a Marriott with Mickey on the wall.
Fans have been making that exact argument about a theme park for years.
A Reddit thread this week brought it back. EPCOT, the front half specifically, and one store in particular.
EPCOT is my favorite park. Saying that first.
But the spine has become the corporate center of EPCOT, and I do not think that is a hot take anymore.
The Store
Thread title, no hedging: Mouse Gear to Creations Shop is one of the biggest downgrades in Walt Disney World history.
Mouse Gear was loud. Industrial. Giant gears, neon, and a real commitment to a look.
Creations Shop is white, bright, open, and smooth.
“Really sad how they took all the theming and charm just to make them look like airports,” wrote user RoliePolieOlie__.
Another cut it shorter. “Creations Shop has all the charm of a Target.”
Fair credit where it belongs. That Mouse Gear carpet had to go. It smelled, and nostalgia does not fix a smell.
But there was a version of this in which Disney lost the carpet but kept the fun. That is not the version we got.
Disney Springs Got the Same Treatment
World of Disney went through it, too, and the thread connected the two immediately.
“World of Disney was the highlight marquee store at Disney Springs. I don’t even want to walk into it now because of how shockingly bland it looks,” wrote user Spongebob226. “Like, my local Disney store at the mall should not outshine this store.”
One commenter said they walked in ready to buy a Loungefly, a Spirit Jersey, and ears. Walked out with nothing.
That is the part that should worry Disney. Not the feelings. The receipt.
Why Disney Might Be Doing It
A theory came up repeatedly. A plain store makes the merchandise pop.
“Their genuine theory is if they make the store as dull as possible it’ll make the actual merchandise pop and therefore sell more,” wrote user ChampionTimes99. “I would go into Mouse Gear all the time but now with Creations Shop I almost never visit.”
The reply is the best line in the thread.
“When the stores were really themed and unique I would always make a point to go check them out as part of the park experience,” wrote user nicktorious_, “and end up leaving with some item I wouldn’t otherwise have bought. Now I can just avoid the bland stores altogether.”
There it is. A themed store was a destination. You went in for the room, and you left with a bag. Strip the room, and there is no reason to go in.
Others blamed upkeep. “It’s cheaper to clean and maintain sterile, generic spaces filled with tile floors and easily replaced mass produced fixtures,” wrote user Ok_Objective_9524. “I hate it.”
Bigger Than One Store
The thread spread fast because the store was never the real complaint.
“Really the whole renovation in the middle of EPCOT there is a downgrade,” wrote user captainwizeazz. “The fact there is some boring planter in the middle and not even any moving water or fountain is terrible.”
The casualty list ran long. The fountain. Electric Umbrella. Fountainview. The Communicore buildings. The fiber-optic walkway that never worked properly is being removed.
“Something fun, flashy, and colorful to something boring, monotone, and gray,” wrote user Infinite-Dinner1725.
And the one that stuck with me. “I want the company to embrace some maximalism,” wrote user Arctic_Dreams. “Embrace being a fun theme park with characters and whimsy. Not everything needs to be white, beige, and sterile.”
What Future World Had
Here is the thing people keep skipping.
Future World was not just decorated. It had a thesis. It believed something specific about tomorrow, and the buildings argued for it. The shapes were odd because the future was supposed to look odd.
Love it or not, you knew what the park was saying.
The spine now says nothing. It is pleasant. Shady, walkable, green. Some guests prefer that, honestly. One commenter wrote, “I like Creations. I think it is fresh and bright.”
Pleasant is not a point of view.
The Same Instinct
Hotels and EPCOT, same move. Smooth the edges. Cut what needs maintaining. Build something that will not date.
Except Disney’s whole edge was looking like nothing else on earth. A themed room and a store shaped like a machine were never efficient. That was the entire point.
Nobody wants the carpet back. They want a park that commits to something.
