September is one of the biggest months of the year at Universal Orlando Resort. Halloween Horror Nights is in full swing, fall crowds are arriving, and Epic Universe has given vacationers another major park to work into their trips.
Yet guests checking Universal’s September operating calendar may find themselves wondering why their theme park days are ending so early.
Universal Studios Florida closing at 5:00 p.m. on Halloween Horror Nights dates is expected. The park needs to clear daytime guests before the separately ticketed event begins.
The problem is that Universal’s other parks aren’t necessarily staying open late enough to make up for those lost hours.
Islands of Adventure is scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. for much of September. A couple of dates have the park closing at 7:00 p.m., while September 23 stands out with an especially early 6:00 p.m. closing.
Epic Universe isn’t offering significantly longer evenings, either. Universal’s newest theme park is scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. on most nights throughout the month.
For a resort trying to compete directly with Walt Disney World for multi-day vacations, that’s not exactly ideal.
Universal Studios Florida’s Early Closing Is Expected
Nobody should be surprised to see Universal Studios Florida close at 5:00 p.m. during Halloween Horror Nights season.
Universal has to transform the park from its normal daytime operation into its massive Halloween event. Regular guests leave, haunted houses prepare to open, scare actors arrive, and Halloween Horror Nights ticket holders eventually take over the park.
That’s simply part of visiting Universal Orlando during the fall.
It also means Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe become much more important for anyone without a Halloween Horror Nights ticket.
Those guests need somewhere to go after Universal Studios Florida closes.
Unfortunately, September’s operating calendar doesn’t leave them with particularly long evenings.
Islands of Adventure Has Some Very Early Nights
An 8:00 p.m. closing might not sound terrible until you consider how much guests can accomplish during those final nighttime hours.
Islands of Adventure has several experiences that are arguably better after sunset.
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure takes guests racing through the Forbidden Forest, while Jurassic World VelociCoaster offers a completely different atmosphere once darkness arrives.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade also looks fantastic at night.
But those experiences become harder to enjoy after dark when the entire park closes at 8:00 p.m.
Then there are the earlier dates.
A 7:00 p.m. closing leaves almost no traditional nighttime park experience. The September 23 schedule is even more unusual, with Islands of Adventure closing at 6:00 p.m.
That’s an extremely early ending for one of Universal Orlando’s flagship theme parks.
Epic Universe Isn’t Solving the Problem
Epic Universe should theoretically give guests another option.
The new park opened in May 2025 and turned Universal Orlando into a much larger destination. Guests now have three major theme parks to divide their vacation time between.
But Epic Universe is also scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. most nights in September.
That’s particularly frustrating considering how much of the park’s atmosphere comes alive after dark.
Celestial Park and the park’s different portals were built with elaborate lighting and nighttime visuals. Guests understandably want enough time to experience those areas after sunset.
An 8:00 p.m. closing doesn’t provide much of that opportunity.
Disney Offers a Different Approach
The comparison with Walt Disney World is unavoidable.
Magic Kingdom also closes early to regular guests when Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes place.
However, Disney doesn’t respond by regularly closing EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at 7:00 or 8:00 p.m.
Guests without Halloween party tickets still have legitimate nighttime options elsewhere.
Universal Orlando should be capable of offering something similar.
If Universal Studios Florida needs to close at 5:00 p.m. for Halloween Horror Nights, keeping Islands of Adventure or Epic Universe open later would give daytime visitors somewhere to continue their vacation.
Instead, some September visitors could watch one park close at 5:00 p.m. and another close only a few hours later.
Guests Deserve Longer Days
Universal Orlando has invested heavily in becoming more than a one- or two-day addition to a Disney vacation.
Epic Universe represents the biggest step yet toward that goal.
But competing with Walt Disney World isn’t only about building impressive attractions. It’s also about giving guests enough hours to experience them.
No one needs Universal’s parks to stay open until midnight every evening.
Still, 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. closings feel surprisingly early during one of the resort’s biggest seasons. A 6:00 p.m. closing at Islands of Adventure is even more difficult to understand from a guest perspective.
Universal Orlando has three major theme parks now.
In September, guests may reasonably expect at least one of them to remain open well into the night.
