REPORT: Imagineering Permit Signals Potential Extended Shutdown for Toy Story Land Ride
Eight years after Toy Story Land welcomed its first guests, one of its original attractions could be approaching its most substantial update yet.
New permit activity from Walt Disney Imagineering has put Alien Swirling Saucers under the microscope. Disney hasn’t announced that the attraction will close, but multiple filings involving work at the ride suggest Imagineering has plans for more than a simple maintenance visit.
Depending on how extensive that work becomes, Disney could eventually need to take Alien Swirling Saucers offline.
And if Imagineering plans a larger transformation than the permits currently reveal, the resulting closure could potentially stretch well beyond a few nights of maintenance.
Multiple Permits Point to Alien Swirling Saucers
The latest development involves a Notice of Commencement covering signage installation at the Toy Story Land attraction.
Design Communications Ltd. is listed as the contractor. The company has previously worked with Walt Disney Imagineering on signage projects elsewhere around Walt Disney World.
Normally, that might sound like a fairly routine filing.
But Imagineering has also filed an earlier permit involving Icarus Exhibits for set element installation at Alien Swirling Saucers.
Disney therefore has two active permits tied to different aspects of the same attraction.
Neither filing tells us exactly what guests will see when the work is finished. Disney also hasn’t publicly announced any changes to Alien Swirling Saucers.
Even so, signage and set element work happening around the same period raises the possibility that Imagineering is preparing a coordinated refresh.
Alien Swirling Saucers Hasn’t Seen a Transformation Like This
Alien Swirling Saucers opened with Toy Story Land in June 2018.
Inspired by the Little Green Men from the Toy Story franchise, the attraction sends guests spinning and sliding across interconnected platforms in colorful toy rocket vehicles.
It’s a relatively simple experience compared with Slinky Dog Dash, but it serves an important purpose within Toy Story Land. It gives families another attraction while helping distribute guests across the area’s limited ride lineup.
After eight years, Disney could simply be preparing to freshen up the attraction.
The interesting part is that Imagineering appears to be addressing multiple visual components.
Signage could involve anything from replacing aging materials to introducing a different look. Set element installation could similarly range from small scenery replacements to more noticeable additions.
Without an announcement from Disney, we don’t know where on that spectrum this project falls.
An Extended Shutdown Is Possible, But Not Confirmed
The permits don’t confirm that Alien Swirling Saucers will close.
That’s particularly important when discussing a potential extended refurbishment. Disney hasn’t announced a last operating date, reopening date, or any downtime whatsoever.
Imagineering could potentially complete some of the work overnight.
However, more complicated installation projects can become difficult when an attraction needs to reopen for thousands of guests every morning.
If crews need prolonged access to areas around the ride path, queue, signage, or sets, closing Alien Swirling Saucers temporarily could give Imagineering considerably more freedom to work.
The duration would depend on what Disney is actually changing.
A cosmetic refurbishment might only require a relatively short shutdown. A more substantial update involving multiple parts of the attraction could potentially keep the ride closed much longer.
Until Disney reveals the scope, both scenarios remain possible.
Toy Story 5 Arrives at an Interesting Time
There’s also an obvious question surrounding Toy Story 5 (2026).
The latest movie opened June 19, just as attention surrounding the theme park attraction began growing.
Disney hasn’t said these projects have anything to do with Toy Story 5 (2026). There is currently no confirmation that Imagineering plans to add characters, scenes, music, or other material from the movie.
But the timing will inevitably fuel speculation.
Disney frequently updates existing attractions as its franchises expand. New set elements would give Imagineering an opportunity to bring something different into Alien Swirling Saucers without completely reinventing the ride.
Whether that’s actually happening remains to be seen.
Toy Story Land Can’t Easily Lose an Attraction
If Alien Swirling Saucers does close, Toy Story Land’s size could make the absence particularly noticeable.
The land has three primary rides: Alien Swirling Saucers, Slinky Dog Dash, and Toy Story Mania!
Taking one of those attractions offline eliminates a third of the land’s ride lineup.
That doesn’t necessarily mean crowds would become unmanageable, but Slinky Dog Dash and Toy Story Mania! would have to absorb guests who might otherwise ride Alien Swirling Saucers.
The impact could become particularly noticeable during holidays and other busy periods.
That’s one reason the timing of any potential refurbishment would matter almost as much as its duration.
All Eyes Are Now on Disney’s Next Move
At this stage, guests can continue riding Alien Swirling Saucers.
Disney hasn’t announced a closure, and the permits alone don’t guarantee one is imminent.
What they do show is that Walt Disney Imagineering has multiple projects connected to the attraction. With both signage and set element installation appearing in the paperwork, there’s reason to watch Alien Swirling Saucers closely.
The next major clue could come through additional permits, visible construction activity, changes to Disney World’s refurbishment calendar, or an official announcement.
Until then, an extended shutdown remains unconfirmed.
