Is ‘Toy Story’ Getting a Live Action Remake? Tom Hanks and Tim Allen Weigh In
Could Toy Story actually work as a live-action movie?
It’s a question Disney fans have debated for years. The studio has spent the last decade adapting many of its most recognizable animated films into live action, but Toy Story presents a unique challenge. Unlike films such as Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King, the franchise revolves around talking toys whose charm is closely tied to Pixar’s animation style.

As it turns out, even Woody and Buzz themselves aren’t convinced.
With Toy Story 5 set to arrive in theaters on June 19, stars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen recently addressed the possibility of Disney one day remaking the original film in live action.

“It Cannot Be Done”
During an interview with Jake’s Takes, Hanks and Allen were asked whether Toy Story could successfully make the transition from animation to live action.
Allen immediately pointed to Lightyear, Pixar’s 2022 spinoff that reimagined Buzz as a more realistic human character voiced by Chris Evans. Reflecting on that approach, Allen said: “They did that version [of] Lightyear where it looked like a human form, but it just didn’t translate well.” He went on to explain why a live-action Buzz would present additional problems, saying, “He’d have to get out of the suit, and he’s got clothes on and Buzz’s hair. I don’t know how you’d ever do that.”
Hanks also appeared unconvinced. After considering whether animatronics could potentially bring Woody and the other toys to life, the actor ultimately reached a simple conclusion: “It’s a conundrum. It cannot be done.”

Toy Story Returns This Month
The discussion comes as Pixar prepares to release Toy Story 5, the latest chapter in a franchise that has remained a cornerstone of the studio since 1995.
Directed by Andrew Stanton and co-directed by Kenna Harris, the sequel sees Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the toys facing a new challenge as technology increasingly competes for children’s attention.
Pixar’s official synopsis reads: “The toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5, and this time it’s Toy meets Tech. Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to what kids are obsessed with today….electronics!”
Toy Story 5 opens only in theaters on June 19, 2026.
