Pixar Confirms a New Lead Character for ‘Toy Story 5’ Ahead of Release

As Toy Story 5 (2026) prepares to arrive in theaters this week, Pixar is finally explaining one of the film’s biggest surprises.

For the first time in the history of the franchise, Woody and Buzz Lightyear will not serve as the movie’s primary characters.

Instead, Jessie is taking center stage.

The revelation comes directly from director Andrew Stanton, who recently opened up about the creative process behind the highly anticipated sequel and why the fan-favorite cowgirl became the focal point of the story.

The Character Change Wasn’t Planned

According to Stanton, Jessie wasn’t originally intended to replace Woody and Buzz as the movie’s lead.

“We never planned that,” Stanton said while discussing the film’s development.

The director explained that when he was first approached about making Toy Story 5 (2026), Pixar didn’t even have a story idea in place.

“Basically, I was asked in 2022 if I’d be interested in making Toy Story 5 and I said ‘what’s the idea?’. I was told nobody had one,” Stanton revealed.

As he began working with co-writer Kenna Harris, several ideas started coming together. Over time, Jessie emerged as the character who made the most sense to anchor the story.

Revisiting Jessie’s Past

One of the biggest reasons Jessie moved into the spotlight stems from a storyline that dates back more than 25 years.

“But, I knew Jessie’s past was always something I wanted to address,” Stanton explained. “So, that was one ingredient I definitely wanted to deal with.”

Fans first learned about Jessie’s heartbreaking history in Toy Story 2 (1999), when audiences discovered she had been abandoned by her owner Emily after being outgrown.

The emotional sequence remains one of the most memorable moments in Pixar history.

However, Stanton clearly felt there was more to explore.

That desire eventually became one of the foundations for Toy Story 5 and helped transform Jessie into the movie’s central character.

Technology Plays a Major Role

Jessie’s expanded role isn’t the only major change coming to the franchise.

Stanton also revealed that he wanted to explore how technology has altered childhood.

“I also knew I wanted to do something on devices,” Stanton said, explaining that digital technology increasingly reaching younger children inspired part of the film’s premise.

The movie reportedly examines the relationship between toys and technology, along with themes involving loneliness and changing play habits.

According to Stanton, multiple ideas eventually merged into a single story.

Later, I had the idea of wanting to see 50 Buzz Lightyears in a multi-linked way,” he said. “Mix all of that together and we had the elements to form our movie around.”

The Future of Toy Story

Even with Jessie leading the way, Woody and Buzz remain important pieces of the franchise.

Still, the fact that Pixar has shifted its focus away from the duo represents one of the biggest changes the series has ever attempted.

For decades, Woody and Buzz defined Toy Story.

Now, Jessie is stepping into the spotlight.

Whether audiences embrace that change remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear: Toy Story 5 is bringing a very different dynamic to Pixar’s most successful franchise as it heads toward its June 19 release.
