Hollywood Studios Guests Cave to High Price Attraction Option as Disney World Park Changes Forever

If you have a trip to Disney’s Hollywood Studios on the books this week, there is a lot to keep in mind before you walk through those gates. The reimagined Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets officially opens to all guests on May 26, 2026, and the conditions shaping up around that debut are about as packed as Sunset Boulevard gets.

Here is everything we know about how the opening is being handled and what guests should actually expect on the ground.

No Virtual Queue on Opening Day — Here Is What That Means

Let’s address the question everyone is asking first. Disney will not be running a virtual queue for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster on opening day or for regular operation going forward. The virtual queue system was used only for a limited run of Annual Passholder preview events held before the May 26 debut. During those previews, boarding groups were dropped through the My Disney Experience app at set intervals, with access restricted to guests who had valid reservations or eligibility windows for each time slot.

With previews wrapped up, Disney is returning to a straightforward standby-plus-Lightning-Lane setup for the general public opening. If you were hoping to snag a boarding group on your phone at 7 a.m., that option simply is not on the table.

This fits a pattern Disney has been following for a while now. Virtual queues were a big part of high-profile launches like TRON Lightcycle / Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, but the company has been stepping back from using them as a long-term solution. Guest frustration with the unpredictability of boarding group drops — and the pressure of watching a clock on the My Disney Experience app — has nudged Disney toward combining traditional standby lines with Lightning Lane access instead, keeping virtual queues in reserve for short-term situations or preview periods only.

Lightning Lane Is Already Selling Out — Both Tiers

If you are planning to use Disney’s paid access options to get ahead of the crowds, act fast, because demand has already outpaced availability. Lightning Lane Premier Pass — the option that lets you skip the standby line at multiple attractions without booking return windows — is sold out for both May 26 and May 27 (both priced at $339) as of now. That level of advance sellout points to a guest base that is already anticipating long waits and heavy attendance across the board.

It does not stop there. The Individual Lightning Lane for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has sold out for four straight days starting May 26. With two of Hollywood Studios’ biggest attractions both hitting capacity limits on the premium access side at the same time, the math on standby waits is not going to be pretty for guests without a paid access option in hand.

Plan for Crowds on Sunset Boulevard

Without any queue distribution system spreading guests across the day, Sunset Boulevard is going to be under serious pressure. The area already carries a heavy load on a typical day — between The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror next door and the evening congestion that builds for Fantasmic! — and adding a brand-new attraction opening to all guests for the first time will only concentrate that further.

Extended standby waits are a near-certainty during the opening window, and guests in line for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster should expect that buildup to ripple out into the surrounding walkways, nearby dining spots, and retail areas. If you are eating or shopping on Sunset Boulevard on May 26, factor that in when you time your visit.

Two New Experiences Opening at Once

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is not the only new thing debuting at Hollywood Studios this week. The new Walt Disney Studios area, which replaces the former Animation Courtyard, is also opening for the first time on May 26. Two major debuts on the same day means the crowd pressure is not limited to a single corner of the park — it is spread across multiple areas, which makes thoughtful planning even more important.

Tips for Surviving the Opening Window

Arrive early. Standby lines for new attractions at Disney parks routinely build quickly in the first hours of operation, and there is no virtual queue to smooth out that morning surge. If Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is your priority, being in the park at rope drop gives you the best shot at a manageable wait before lines stretch to their peak.

Book Lightning Lane now if it is still available for your visit date. Given the May 26 and 27 sellouts already in place, do not wait on this. Have a backup plan. If standby waits hit the two-hour-plus range, knowing which lower-demand experiences you can pivot to will keep your day moving and save your energy for the moments that matter.

The opening of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets is genuinely one of the most significant additions Hollywood Studios has seen this year, and the demand surrounding it reflects that. Going in with realistic expectations — and a flexible itinerary — will make all the difference.
