Disney Quietly Signals Predicted End of the ‘Star Wars’ Franchise
Deep discounts on Star Wars merchandise at a Disney theme park might seem routine, but when they come weeks before The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) opens in theaters, they seem more like an omen.
A Film With a Difficult Road Ahead

The Mandalorian & Grogu premieres on May 22, 2026, but confidence in the film’s box-office potential has been quietly eroding. The movie, originally developed as the fourth season of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, and Sigourney Weaver as Ward, with Jon Favreau directing.
Early projections put the opening weekend among the weakest of any Star Wars film produced under Disney’s ownership. Reports suggest executives at both Disney and Lucasfilm are privately concerned about the film’s commercial performance. The $166 million production budget — the lowest of any Disney-era Lucasfilm release — offers some cushion for profitability, but the outlook from the outside hasn’t been optimistic.

When critics received an early look at the first 15 minutes of the film, their measured responses did little to shift the mood among Star Wars fans. A Reddit comment from u/No_Catch_1490 drew over 1,200 upvotes:
“As is the case for many I suspect, I simply do not care about this film. The show lost me when it started getting embroiled in Jedi/Sequels stuff, and most crucially I know the actions of Mando or anyone else are pointless because the Sequels will occur. It could actually be a good film (though this sounds increasingly unlikely each time we hear something about it) and it would still fall flat for that reason.”
“This seems like it’s not even bad. Just straight up a nothing movie,” u/AmbitiousElk4002 echoed. “[Nothing] of value, spectacle, depth, etc.”
