Universal Studios Is Creating Cheaper Vacations by Stealing the One Thing Disney Has Done Best
Disney did not invent the theme park dining pass by accident. It is one of the smartest financial moves in the vacation industry, and Universal Studios Hollywood just borrowed it directly.
On March 28th, Universal Studios Hollywood launched a brand new all-day Dining Pass, and if it sounds familiar, that is because the concept has Disney’s fingerprints all over it. Pre-pay for your meals before you walk through the gate, stop doing the mental math at every restaurant, and enjoy your day. Universal just figured out what Disney has known for years, and guests are already paying attention.
What the Pass at Universal Actually Offers
The Universal Studios Hollywood Dining Pass gives guests two eligible entrees and four flexible credits that can be used toward sides, snacks, desserts, or beverages throughout the day. All eligible items are clearly marked on menu boards across the park with a dedicated Dining Pass logo, so there is no guessing about what qualifies.
The pass can be purchased in advance at UniversalStudiosHollywood.com or at participating restaurants inside the park. It activates on first use and can be added directly to the free Universal Studios Hollywood app through the My Wallet section. Simple, clean, and straightforward from start to finish.
The food behind the pass is worth mentioning, too. Executive Chef Julia Thrash and her team prepare every item fresh daily out of a 30,000-square-foot onsite production kitchen, ensuring quality that matches the ambition of the pass itself.
How Disney Has Been Doing This for Years
The Disney Dining Plan has been a cornerstone of Walt Disney World vacation planning for a long time, but the 2026 version has not been without its problems. Late 2025 saw over 35 restaurants temporarily drop off the official roster during the annual contract negotiation period, causing real concern for families who had already booked around the Kids Eat Free promotion running through much of 2026.
The situation has mostly stabilized, with major locations like Via Napoli, The BOATHOUSE, Morimoto Asia, and Yak and Yeti Restaurant all returning to the plan. But several high-profile holdouts remain, including Space 220 at EPCOT, Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’, and both T-Rex Cafe and Rainforest Cafe. On top of that, some returning restaurants introduced new meal period restrictions, with certain locations accepting Dining Plan credits only during lunch or dinner, but not both.
Universal’s pass has none of that complexity. One day, clearly marked items, no annual contract drama, no meal period restrictions to track down in an app before you sit down to eat.
Why This Changes the Conversation Between Disney and Universal
Universal Studios Hollywood has been closing the gap with Disney on multiple fronts, and this dining pass is another step in that direction. For guests who split their time between both parks or are actively deciding where to spend their vacation budget, the comparison is now direct.
Disney’s Dining Plan covers a larger resort over multiple days, with more restaurants and a greater variety. Universal’s pass is a single-day pass for a single park. But the simplicity of Universal’s version is genuinely appealing, especially compared to a Disney plan that has spent the last several months dealing with missing restaurants and new restrictions that guests have to actively track in an app to avoid surprise charges.
Disney invented this move. Universal just made it look easier.
