HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Unveils First Trailer, With Two Unexpected Changes

The first official teaser for the upcoming Harry Potter series has finally been released, offering fans their first look at the high-profile adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s books.

Recently, at Series Mania, HBO Max head of original programming Sarah Aubrey described the world created in the series as “absolutely extraordinary” and revealed the first image of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry in a Gryffindor cloak approaching the Quidditch pitch.

Well, she wasn’t wrong. Watch the first official trailer for the reboot, which confirms both the series’ official title and a new release window:

The cast for the HBO series, whose first season is officially titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone — after the first book, of course — includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

The supporting lineup includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, to name but a few.

Several characters appear in the trailer, including the highly anticipated Severus Snape, who’s portrayed by Paapa Essiedu. On that note, the project has faced much controversy since it was announced, including boycotts by trans activists over J. K. Rowling’s involvement and, as recently revealed by Essiedu, racist attacks and death threats regarding his casting.

Reports of bullying among younger cast members on set have also surfaced.

The series is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, His Dark Materials, and Killing Eve. Executive producers also include J. K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) will direct multiple episodes and serve as an executive producer.

First announced in January 2021, Harry Potter will span seven seasons—one for each book—and is expected to run over a 10-year period. Reports indicate that the production is among HBO’s most ambitious, with a budget exceeding $100 million per episode.

Filming is taking place at Leavesden, near Watford, on a purpose-built set next to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, where the original films were shot. Additional locations across the U.K. are also being used to bring the wizarding world to life.

Warner Bros. maintains that the new series is a “faithful adaptation” and that the “classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise.”

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO on Christmas 2026. The series consists of eight episodes.
