Disney Unexpectedly Prolongs Popular Resort Refurbishment at Walt Disney World

Planning a Walt Disney World trip always means juggling hotel costs, park plans, dining reservations, and transportation. Now, there’s another detail guests may want to keep in mind before they book. Disney has confirmed that one of its biggest hotel refurbishment projects will last longer than many people expected, and that matters because it involves one of the most recognizable places to stay on property.

This update did not arrive with a major rollout or a big promotional push. It surfaced more quietly, making it easy to miss at first. Still, once guests looked more closely, the scope of the project became much clearer. Disney is not just working through a short refresh here. This timeline now stretches well into the future.

Resort Construction Has Become Part of the 2026 Experience

That news lands at a time when hotel work has become a regular part of the Walt Disney World experience. In 2026, Disney continues to refresh rooms, pool areas, shared spaces, and exterior features across multiple resorts. Some updates feel minor. Others affect how a stay looks and feels day to day.

Disney clearly wants to modernize parts of the resort experience while keeping its hotels competitive and polished. That means guests now see more temporary closures, more rerouted walkways, and more signs of active work than they may have a few years ago. Most of those projects are managed in phases so that vacations can continue without major disruption. Even so, many travelers now know that booking a Disney hotel does not always mean a completely construction-free stay.

That broader trend makes the latest update at Disney’s Contemporary Resort feel even more important.

Why the Contemporary Gets So Much Attention

Disney’s Contemporary Resort carries a different kind of weight with fans. It is not just another deluxe hotel. It is one of the original Walt Disney World resorts, opening with the resort itself in 1971. That history alone makes it stand out.

Then there is the look of the place. The giant A-frame design and the monorail running through the building make the Contemporary one of the most recognizable hotels Disney has ever built. For many guests, staying there feels like staying inside a piece of Disney history.

Its location only adds to that appeal. The Contemporary offers quick access to Magic Kingdom, making it especially attractive to families who want convenience. That’s one reason refurbishment news here tends to get more attention than it might at another hotel.

The Timeline Just Got Much Longer

Work at the Contemporary did not begin this year. It started back in 2024, and at first it felt like the kind of long-term project that would eventually wrap up without drawing too much notice. Instead, Disney has now confirmed that the refurbishment will continue through 2027.

That extended timeline makes this much more than a basic hotel refresh. It also means guests visiting in 2026 will continue to see active work in several parts of the resort.

The next major phase begins in spring 2026, when exterior work on the Main Tower begins. Beginning March 23, crews will move into that portion of the project, and Disney has already warned guests that they may notice blocked views, altered walking routes, and daytime construction activity. The resort stays open, but the atmosphere may feel different than usual.

Main Tower and Bridge Changes Could Be Noticeable

The Main Tower work is only part of the story. The Skyway Bridge that connects Bay Lake Tower to the Contemporary’s Main Tower will also operate with limits for part of the spring. From late March through early May 2026, the bridge will close on weekdays during the day, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will reopen after 5:00 p.m. and remain available on evenings and weekends.

That might sound like a small operational detail, but it could affect how guests move around the resort during the day. Instead of taking the direct route, some visitors will need to use alternate paths while work continues nearby.

Bay Lake Tower Guests Will Notice Changes Too

The refurbishment reaches beyond the Main Tower. Bay Lake Tower will also see exterior repairs on elevator landings through late spring 2026. At the same time, several popular recreation areas remain closed. The Bay Cove Pool, Cove Bar, water play area, and whirlpool spa have all been unavailable since late January, with reopening planned for early May 2026.

Guests can still use the main pool and other water features at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, but shared amenities may feel busier while those in the Bay Lake Tower areas stay offline.

What Guests Should Expect Next

For anyone booking the Contemporary in 2026 or later, this project is now part of the planning conversation. The hotel remains open, and Disney is keeping core amenities available, but the refurbishment will shape the guest experience for a while longer. Expect daytime noise, shifting pathways, and some visual disruption depending on where you stay.

Long-term, the goal is clear. Disney wants to preserve one of its most iconic hotels while updating it for the future. In the meantime, guests should go in knowing that this classic resort will keep evolving for years, not months.
