Expedition Everest Closure Timeline Emerges After Disney Confirms Yeti Repair
Expedition Everest is finally getting the repair Disney fans have discussed for years.
Now comes the less exciting part.
Disney confirmed at D23 that it plans to fix the Yeti inside Expedition Everest at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The enormous figure has remained stationary for years, relying on a strobe-light effect as ride vehicles race past.
Disney specifically plans to repair the existing figure rather than replace it. The Yeti will also remain in its current location inside the mountain.

That’s huge news for Expedition Everest.
It also means a major closure has to come eventually.
Disney Hasn’t Announced a Closure Yet
Disney hasn’t provided a refurbishment date or said how long Expedition Everest will need to close.
Those remain two of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the project.
Still, we can start putting together a possible timeline based on everything happening around Animal Kingdom.
And 2028 currently makes the most sense.
Disney is in the middle of transforming the former DinoLand U.S.A. area into Tropical Americas. That project is expected to open in late 2027.
Until then, Animal Kingdom needs Expedition Everest.
Taking one of the park’s biggest rides offline while Disney is already rebuilding another major section of the park would create an enormous hole in the attraction lineup.
That’s why we don’t expect Disney to rush into this refurbishment.
2028 Could Be the Key Year
Once Tropical Americas opens, the situation changes.
Animal Kingdom will have its major new attractions operating, giving Disney more breathing room to temporarily remove Expedition Everest from service.
The report detailing Disney’s Yeti plans also points toward 2028 as the earliest logical timeframe, noting that an Everest closure before Tropical Americas opens would be difficult for Animal Kingdom to handle.
To be clear, Disney has not announced a 2028 closure.
That’s our current expectation based on the park’s construction timeline and the scope of the Yeti project.
Disney could wait until later. It could also surprise us with a different plan.
But shutting down Everest after Tropical Americas opens makes considerably more operational sense than doing it beforehand.
This Probably Won’t Be a Quick Fix
There’s another big mystery: how long will Expedition Everest actually stay closed?
Disney hasn’t said.
The attraction previously underwent a multi-month refurbishment, and Disney specifically confirmed at the time that the Yeti wasn’t included in that work.
This project will be different.
Disney is committing to repairing the enormous existing figure after years of operating it without its intended movement. Questions remain about exactly how Disney will accomplish that work and what will be required inside the mountain.
That makes it difficult to imagine this being handled during a short routine refurbishment.

A Major Expedition Everest Shutdown Is Coming
For now, nothing changes for guests visiting Animal Kingdom.
Expedition Everest remains available, and Disney hasn’t put a closure on the calendar.
But the D23 announcement changes the attraction’s long-term outlook.
We now know Disney intends to bring the Yeti back to life. Eventually, Expedition Everest will have to close so crews can make that happen.
If Tropical Americas opens as expected in late 2027, our attention immediately turns toward 2028.
Disney hasn’t confirmed that timeline yet.
But after years of waiting for the Yeti to move again, Expedition Everest fans may soon find themselves waiting for something else: the mountain to reopen.
