‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Actor Says Her Character Will Return in New Film
Following the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in 2024, Sony Pictures has yet to announce another live-action film in the franchise. While the latest sequel reunited several legacy stars with the younger cast introduced in Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), its mixed reception and lower box-office performance left the future of the iconic series unclear.
But despite that uncertainty, one of the franchise’s breakout stars hopes the story isn’t finished yet.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter after the release of Scream 7 (2026), Mckenna Grace said she would gladly return as Phoebe Spengler if another Ghostbusters movie happens.
“I think there’s always hope. Personally, I haven’t heard anything lately. I’d be more secretive if I had,” Grace said.
She added: “I would always be honored to play Phoebe again, and whether it would be next year, I feel like I would have heard about it by now if I was. So my fingers are always crossed. As of right now, I have no clue, but I definitely think that it could be a possibility someday in the future.”

Grace first joined the franchise in Afterlife, where she starred alongside Finn Wolfhard, Logan Kim, and Celeste O’Connor as a new generation of characters tied to the original Ghostbusters team from the 1984 film. Afterlife was widely praised by audiences and performed well commercially, helping restore confidence in the long-running franchise.
Its sequel, Frozen Empire, expanded the story by bringing the action back to New York City and reuniting the younger cast with several members of the original team from Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), including stars like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson.

The revival came after Sony’s controversial attempt to reboot the series with the female-led Ghostbusters (2016). That film, starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, generated intense online debate before ultimately becoming a widely criticized box-office disappointment.
Outside the supernatural franchise, Grace has remained extremely busy. In addition to appearing in Scream 7 alongside O’Connor, she recently starred in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (2025) and has been cast in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (2026).
She will also portray Daphne Blake in Netflix’s upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo series, and collaborated with Ice Nine Kills on the Scream 7 soundtrack.
Even if another film isn’t announced soon, the Ghostbusters universe is continuing to grow. An animated series and an animated feature film are currently in development for Netflix, suggesting the paranormal franchise isn’t disappearing anytime soon.
