Gorillas Moved Backstage After Breaking Exhibit Window

Guests exploring Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail at Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently noticed something unusual happening inside one of the park’s most beloved animal habitats. Several members of the park’s gorilla troop suddenly disappeared from view, leaving many visitors wondering what had happened.

The trail, located in the Africa section of the park, typically offers guests the chance to see the animals lounging in the grass, climbing rocks, or interacting with one another near the viewing windows. For many visitors, it’s one of the most memorable wildlife encounters at Walt Disney World.

But earlier this week, people walking through the exhibit began noticing something was different. The habitat felt quieter, and several gorillas that normally spend time in the main viewing area were nowhere to be seen.

Guests Begin Asking Questions

The first signs that something had changed came when guests reported that only a small number of gorillas were visible along the trail. Cast Members stationed nearby confirmed that the entire troop was not currently available for viewing.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom actually cares for two separate gorilla groups. There is a family troop and a bachelor troop made up of adult males. The arrangement mirrors how gorillas live in the wild, where mature males often leave their family groups and form smaller all-male groups.

While some of the bachelor males could still be seen by guests, many of the gorillas that normally occupy the main habitat—especially the females and younger animals—were missing from the exhibit.

At the time, Disney had not shared an explanation, which naturally led to speculation among visitors.

A Damaged Viewing Window Sparks the Issue

A clearer explanation soon emerged. The gorilla family had actually been moved backstage temporarily so repairs could be made to the habitat’s viewing window.

According to reports from WDWNT, one of the gorillas had been picking at the gasket between two glass panels. Over time, that behavior caused damage to the seal around the window.

Although the glass itself remained intact, the issue required maintenance crews to repair the area. To safely perform the work, the gorilla family troop was relocated backstage until the repairs are complete.

Guests visiting the trail may notice a section of the window covered with a scrim while the work is underway.

The Exhibit’s Long History at the Park

The gorilla habitat has been a key part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom since the park opened in 1998. Over the years, guests have watched multiple generations of the troop grow up in the carefully designed environment.

For decades, the troop was led by a silverback named Gino, who became a favorite among guests and animal care teams alike. Gino passed away last year at the age of 44, marking a significant moment in the history of the troop.

Throughout his life, Gino played an important role in conservation and animal care research. Animal experts even trained him to allow cardiac ultrasounds without anesthesia, which helped advance veterinary knowledge about gorilla health.

When Will the Gorillas Return?

For now, guests visiting the park may see fewer gorillas than usual along the trail. However, the attraction itself remains open, and the bachelor troop can still be observed in their separate habitat.

The rest of the gorilla family is expected to return once the repairs to the viewing window are complete.

While the temporary absence surprised some guests, situations like this are fairly common at zoological facilities. Animals are often moved backstage while habitats undergo maintenance or safety upgrades.

And in this case, it seems one curious gorilla simply created a little extra work for Disney’s maintenance team.
