Major Structural Changes Revealed in New Muppets Coaster Permit

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is already in the middle of a major transformation, and now a newly filed construction permit suggests that the upcoming Muppets version of Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster could involve more than a simple character swap.

The attraction is set to close on March 2 and reopen in summer 2026 with a full Muppets re-theme. Disney has confirmed that the ride will retain its high-speed launch and core coaster experience, but this latest permit points to something bigger happening behind the scenes.

A Contractor That Raises Eyebrows

The permit itself is listed for general construction. On paper, that wording sounds routine. What stands out, however, is the contractor attached to the filing: Coastal Steel, a company known for steel fabrication and structural erection services.

When Disney brings in a steel-focused contractor, it often signals physical alterations that require reinforced framing, support structures, or substantial scenic installations. This goes beyond repainting walls or swapping signage. Steel work can mean new structural frameworks inside the show building or major set pieces that need reinforcement.

While Disney has not publicly detailed what those changes involve, the permit suggests the transformation will have real, tangible impacts on the attraction’s physical environment.

What Could Actually Change?

Disney has already indicated that the ride’s pre-show will still take place in a recording studio setting. That detail implies that the general ride system, including the track and launch mechanism, is likely staying intact. Replacing the coaster track would represent a massive capital project, and there has been no indication of that level of overhaul.

Instead, the steel work could relate to new scenic environments, updated staging in the pre-show, or enhanced theming elements throughout the ride’s interior. Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster is housed inside a large show building that relies heavily on themed structures to frame the experience. Installing new Muppets-inspired set pieces, especially ones designed to feel chaotic or oversized, could require steel framing and reinforcement.

Another possibility involves reconfiguring certain interior sections to better support updated lighting, projection, or practical effects. Disney has increasingly leaned into more immersive environments across its attractions, and the Muppets’ energetic style would lend itself to a bold visual refresh.

Part of a Bigger Hollywood Studios Evolution

This permit does not exist in isolation. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is undergoing sweeping changes. Animation Courtyard is being reimagined as The Walt Disney Studios. Muppets Courtyard has closed to make way for a new Monsters, Inc. land. The Muppets’ relocation to Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster allows Disney to keep the franchise alive in the park while clearing space for new development.

The timeline also suggests urgency. With the ride closing in early March and reopening in summer 2026, Disney plans to complete demolition, structural work, scenic installation, and testing within a relatively tight window. That kind of turnaround typically means design plans have been finalized for some time.

Guests visiting during construction may notice increased activity around the attraction’s exterior, including material deliveries or staging equipment. While much of the coaster sits indoors, structural modifications often create visible signs of work.

At this point, Disney has not released concept art or detailed descriptions of the updated ride scenes. However, the involvement of a steel fabrication contractor strongly indicates that the re-theme will introduce meaningful physical changes rather than simply layering Muppets characters onto the existing show sets.

When Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster reopens in summer 2026, it may feel more transformed than many fans initially expected.
