Report: Opening Sequence of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Revealed Online

Fans may have this to look forward to at the end of the year.

Marvel Studios is once again standing at a familiar yet precarious juncture, recalibrating the Marvel Cinematic Universe after years of expansion, experimentation, and shifting audience expectations. As the studio prepares to close out its current phase, a mix of legacy characters, revived franchises, and strategic omissions are shaping what lies ahead.

At the center of that evolution is Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026. The film represents a major creative pivot for Marvel, reuniting directors Anthony and Joe Russo with the franchise for the first time since Avengers: Endgame (2019). Earlier plans built around Kang the Conqueror have been abandoned, with Doctor Doom now positioned as the film’s primary antagonist. In a move that immediately reframed expectations, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU in a role vastly different from Tony Stark.

Marvel began setting expectations early in 2025 with a heavily viewed “chair reveal” livestream that unveiled a sprawling ensemble cast. The announcement confirmed appearances from Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), and James Marsden (Cyclops).

That reveal also marked the formal return of several actors from Fox’s X-Men films, including Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), and Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), reinforcing Marvel Studios’ long-term Multiverse strategy.

However, the cast list also raised eyebrows for who wasn’t included. Some longtime MCU stars addressed their absence directly, including Mark Ruffalo. The actor, who has played Bruce Banner since The Avengers (2012), joked about his exclusion during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, saying, “They decided that it was better to get rid of me than for me to tell the end of the next movie.”

While Ruffalo has confirmed he will not appear in Doomsday amid speculation surrounding his departure, Marvel has locked him in for Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, slated for July 31, 2026. Industry chatter has also pointed to Kevin Feige stepping back from Spider-Man 4’s day-to-day production to focus his attention on Doomsday.

Ruffalo isn’t alone among notable omissions. Names missing from the chair reveal included Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, and newer additions like Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. That absence didn’t last long for Evans, however.

During the theatrical rollout of Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), Marvel Studios quietly dropped a series of Doomsday teaser spots. The first brought audiences back to Steve Rogers, confirming Evans’ involvement. Subsequent teasers spotlighted Thor, the X-Men, and a sequence featuring the Wakandans encountering Ben Grimm/Thing, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

New reports are now adding fuel to the speculation. According to claims from MyTimeToShineHello, relayed by Comic Book Movie, Avengers: Doomsday may open with an unexpected confrontation involving two characters not previously announced.

“Apparently, the movie will open with Maguire’s web-slinger battling the X-Men, ‘and particularly Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine,'” Comic Book Movie writes. “This somewhat corroborates claims we’ve heard about an Incursion destroying Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man Universe, and it gives Maguire’s Peter Parker a lot to fight for in this movie and Avengers: Secret Wars as he looks to bring back his loved ones.”

The same scooper also made sweeping claims about the film’s overall scale. “Avengers: Doomsday is not only the most epic Avengers movie, but it might be the most epic movie OF ALL TIME,” they wrote (via Comic Book Movie). “The opening scene alone tops any previous Avengers movie, and the final battle is just INSANE.”

None of these details have been confirmed by Marvel Studios or Disney. Still, the level of attention surrounding Doomsday this far ahead of release is notable, particularly as the film occupies a prime December slot that has historically delivered massive box office returns.

Speculation has also been driven by promotional artwork revealed at the Walt Disney Studios Marketing Expo in Shanghai last year. The image centers on Doctor Doom’s armor, with two emblems affixed to his cloak.

One bears a resemblance to Captain Marvel’s star insignia, while the other echoes Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Their placement has sparked theories that Doom may have already defeated Multiversal variants of these heroes, rather than the symbols serving as mere aesthetic choices.

Whether intentional or not, the imagery has deepened curiosity around Doom’s ascent and the magnitude of the upheaval Marvel is preparing.

That transformation is already in motion. Although The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened strongly in 2025 and surpassed Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and Thunderbolts* (2025), its steep second-weekend decline underscored Marvel’s ongoing challenge in sustaining momentum across releases.

Even so, Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers have framed Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) as foundational projects designed to realign the franchise. Together, they are expected to elevate the X-Men and redefine which characters form the MCU’s core moving forward.

With Downey’s Doctor Doom at the forefront and a cast pulling from decades of Marvel history, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a defining chapter as the studio enters its next phase.
