Disney Overhauls Classic Haunted Mansion Area Amid Major Magic Kingdom Transformation
Disney’s biggest construction project is beginning to influence more than just the land where new attractions will eventually open. As work on Piston Peak continues, nearby locations are also receiving noticeable updates, giving guests an early look at how this corner of the park may evolve in the coming years.
One of the clearest examples sits beside The Haunted Mansion, where Disney is giving a longtime building a new look as construction continues across this side of the park.
Piston Peak Is Reshaping This Part of Magic Kingdom
Piston Peak will replace the former Rivers of America area with a setting inspired by the national park world of Pixar’s Cars. Disney plans to fill the land with forests, mountains, waterfalls, rocky scenery, and wilderness-style architecture.
Rather than recreating Radiator Springs, Disney is developing an original destination inspired by America’s outdoor landscapes. Familiar Cars characters will still appear, but the area is expected to feel like a scenic national park created for Magic Kingdom.
That vision may explain why Disney is making changes around the project’s edges. Piston Peak will sit near older attractions, so nearby buildings and walkways may need to blend into the new environment.
A Building Beside The Haunted Mansion Is Expanding
The most noticeable nearby project is happening next to The Haunted Mansion.
The building, marked by a tower with a sloped, peaked roof, previously served as part of the attraction’s extended queue. Construction walls blocked the area months ago, and crews later expanded the structure after demolishing the Mike Fink Keel Boats dock.
Workers installed a steel framework behind the building before covering it with plywood and sheathing. The addition now features yellow exterior paneling and several sets of white window shutters.
The yellow siding differs from the original blue-gray paneling, though it resembles the shingles on the nearby tower. Disney has not announced what the building will become. The work may connect to a permit filed earlier this year involving MLC Theming, but its exact purpose remains unclear.
Changes have also appeared inside The Haunted Mansion queue. Construction walls recently came down around the graveyard, revealing rearranged gravestones.
The Haunted Mansion Has Received Exterior Work
The Haunted Mansion itself has also spent months receiving exterior updates while remaining open.
Large themed scrims previously covered sections of the attraction during construction. Disney designed those coverings to resemble the mansion, helping hide the work behind them.
Most of the major scrims have now come down, although some work remains visible. Wooden boards still cover portions of the queue and nearby walkways as construction continues.
The ride remains open, but the activity around its exterior shows how much attention Disney is giving this corner of Magic Kingdom.
Piston Peak Has Already Removed Familiar Landmarks
The work near The Haunted Mansion follows larger changes elsewhere.
Disney has drained the Rivers of America, permanently closed Tom Sawyer Island, and ended operations for the Liberty Square Riverboat. Those removals cleared the way for Piston Peak and changed views that had defined this part of Magic Kingdom for decades.
The former riverfront now looks completely different as construction moves forward.
More Updates Could Still Be Ahead
Disney has only confirmed the work currently underway, but additional changes around The Haunted Mansion would not be surprising.
Walt Disney World has continued to modernize and retheme older spaces, and Piston Peak will introduce a very different environment beside Liberty Square. Disney could eventually adjust pathways, queue areas, or nearby buildings to create a smoother connection between the two sections.
For now, those possibilities remain speculation. Disney has not announced a larger overhaul for The Haunted Mansion or explained how every nearby project fits into the final design.
An Iconic Area Is Entering a New Era
The Haunted Mansion remains open, but its surroundings are quickly becoming less familiar. The expanded building next door, the attraction’s exterior refurbishment, and construction for Piston Peak are changing this side of Magic Kingdom at the same time.
Disney has not revealed the complete plan, so questions remain about the building’s future and whether more updates will follow. Still, by the time Piston Peak opens, the area around one of Magic Kingdom’s most recognizable attractions will look noticeably different.
