‘Ant-Man’ Star Suffers Brain Damage, Puts Acting Career on Hold
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded steadily since Iron Man (2008), drawing in hundreds of actors across interconnected franchises. As the slate has grown, so too has the number of performers stepping away, whether due to completed story arcs, shifting priorities, or personal circumstances.
Departures from Marvel projects are not unusual. Some actors exit quietly after a final appearance, while others leave the door open for future returns. In recent years, however, more exits have been driven by decisions unrelated to creative direction or contractual disputes.

For example, in 2024, Evangeline Lilly confirmed she had stepped back from acting. After portraying Hope van Dyne, also known as the Wasp, across multiple Marvel films, she said she planned to focus on family life, writing, and humanitarian work rather than new screen roles.
At the time, Lilly emphasized that the break was intentional. She stated she felt fulfilled outside the industry and was not actively pursuing future projects. Now, however, Lilly has confirmed that she is focused on recovery after a traumaticĀ brain injury sustained in 2025.
Evangeline Lilly Shares Details of the Injury and Diagnosis
Lilly shared that the injury occurred during a vacation in Hawaii in May 2025. She fainted while on the beach and fell headfirst into a boulder, sustaining injuries that required hospital treatment.

āAt the hospital, the nurses and doctor went straight into action, more determined to find the cause of my blackout than to stitch up the hole punctured into my face by the rock,ā Lilly wrote in a Substack essay at the time.
On New Yearās Day, Lilly posted a video update on Instagram addressing questions from followers about her condition and recent medical scans.
āA lot of you have asked how Iām doing,ā she said. āA lot of you have inquired about the brain scan that you heard I got. The results came back from the scan, and almost every area in my brain is functioning at a decreased capacity.ā
She added, āI do have brain damage from the TBI (traumatic brain injury) and possibly other factors going on. My job now is to get to the bottom of that with my doctors.ā

Lilly said the injury has required her to slow her pace significantly. She described the most recent holiday season as āthe most restful Christmasā she has had since the births of her two sons in 2011 and 2015.
āIām still feeling extraordinarily grateful and blessed to be able to play for one more day, one more year on this beautiful living planet,ā she said. āSo, that is my concussion update. Thank you all for caring.ā
What This Means for Evangeline Lilly’s Acting Future
Lilly is the second star to step back following a traumatic injury.
Jeremy Renner, who portrays Clint Barton/Hawkeye, spent much of 2023 recovering from a near-fatal snowplow accident that left him with multiple broken bones and required extensive rehabilitation before any return to work.

As was the case for Renner, support from Lillyās Marvel colleagues followed her update.
Michelle Pfeiffer, who portrayed Janet van Dyne in the Ant-Man films, commented on Lillyās post, writing, āYou are a warrior. Nothing ā not even this will defeat you my friend.ā
David Dastmalchian, who played Kurt in the Ant-Man franchise, also commented with a message of support.
Lillyās most recent Marvel appearance was Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). The film grossed $476.1 million worldwide and received mixed to negative critical responses, earning a 46% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In 2024, Lilly told Variety that she was no longer under contract with Marvel Studios. She said she had already been on hiatus from acting since completing Quantumania.
āI could return tomorrow, two years from now or never,ā Lilly said. āAt the moment I am not actively pursuing any work in the industry and am not under any contractual obligations to anybody.ā
Despite that, some fans had speculated about a potential return in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) or Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), both of which will feature large ensemble casts. Paul Rudd is confirmed to return as Scott Lang.

Lilly has not indicated any plans to resume acting. Her recent statements have focused on recovery and ongoing medical evaluation rather than professional commitments.
Before joining Marvel, Lilly was best known for her role as Kate Austen on Lost. For now, her public updates suggest her priorities remain outside Hollywood as she continues addressing the effects of her injury.
