‘The Mandalorian’ Scrapped: Jon Favreau Breaks Silence on ‘Star Wars’ Pivot
Jon Favreau has offered a new update on the status of The Mandalorian, adding clarity to a project many assumed had been quietly shelved.
Led by Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin and supported by a growing cast of characters across the franchise timeline, the show wrapped up its third season in 2023. While Season 3 generated a more mixed response than earlier installments, expectations for Season 4 stayed high.

Showrunner Jon Favreau confirmed in 2023 that scripts were being written. However, the situation changed in January 2024 when Disney announced The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
That announcement coincided with reports that Disney planned to “ramp up” its theatrical output. Shawn Levy’s Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth, is expected to follow. A separate film centered on Rey (Daisy Ridley) remains stalled in development.
Disney+ has also grown quieter. Aside from Ahsoka Season 2, few Star Wars titles have advanced in recent months, leaving fans unsure whether Season 4 of The Mandalorian is still possible.

A new comment from Favreau now offers insight into whether the series could continue on Disney+.
Jon Favreau Shares Status of Season 4
Speaking to Empire Magazine (via Geek Tyrant), Favreau confirmed that he has not discarded his work.
“We were planning on doing a fourth season,” he said. “I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here.”
He also stated that the scripts were not reused for the upcoming film. “It’s structured around a movie structure as opposed to a serialized weekly television show,” he said. “So there’s a larger throw to the whole thing.”

Having material written does not guarantee production. Disney makes the final decision on what moves forward. Adam Driver recently revealed that a script for The Hunt for Ben Solo was completed but was rejected by Disney CEO Bob Iger and Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman.
This is the same company that previously approved the line “somehow, Palpatine returned.”
What To Know About ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’
The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled to release in 2026. Lucasfilm has given limited information, confirming only that the New Republic recruits Din Djarin and Grogu after the fall of the Empire. Jeremy Allen White will portray Rotta the Hutt, and Sigourney Weaver will play Ward, leader of the Adelphi Rangers.

Speculation has grown about which characters could join the film. Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) will not appear after his Season 3 death. Cara Dune (Gina Carano) is unlikely due to her legal dispute with Disney. Temuera Morrison has said he is not involved, despite previous crossovers with The Book of Boba Fett.
Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) remains a possible addition, given her involvement with Grand Admiral Thrawn and her alignment with the post–Return of the Jedi timeline. Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze could also return, given her expanded Season 3 role and her leadership of Mandalore.
Another open question involves Pedro Pascal’s physical performance. Because of the character’s Creed, Pascal often provides voice work while Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder perform in the armor. Pascal told The Hollywood Reporter, “Frankly, my body wasn’t up for the task… But now we’ve figured it out, which is super cool.”
The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
