Fans Say Disney World Was Never the Same After This Decision

In Disney World’s long history, there have been big decisions—opening EPCOT, building Animal Kingdom, even creating Galaxy’s Edge. But none of those reshaped the guest experience quite like the decision to close the parks in 2020. When COVID-19 hit, Disney did something fans thought was unthinkable: it shut down completely.

That shutdown wasn’t just a pause. It set the stage for a “new Disney World” that fans still debate to this day. Some things eventually came back. Others never did. And what replaced them often cost more.

Missing Experiences That Never Returned

Take Hollywood Studios, for example. Voyage of the Little Mermaid closed with the pandemic and never reopened. Other stage shows and street performers quietly vanished as well. For years, Disney told guests these closures were “temporary,” but many of those promises never materialized. To longtime fans, it felt like the magic had been trimmed down.

The FastPass Switch-Up

Before 2020, grabbing a free FastPass felt like winning the day. After reopening, that benefit was gone, replaced by Lightning Lane. Now, guests pay extra for the chance to skip lines. For many families, it turned a once-free convenience into a premium upcharge, and it’s become one of the most controversial changes Disney has ever made.

Cast Members Under Pressure

The magic also depends on people—cast members who bring the parks to life. But with thousands furloughed or laid off during the pandemic, many who returned were stretched thin. Fans often notice that the smiles feel a little forced, or the enthusiasm is missing. The magic is still there, but it doesn’t always sparkle the way it used to.

Less Time in the Parks for Some

Extra Magic Hours once gave every resort guest extended time in the parks. After the reopening, that changed. Today, extended evening hours are reserved for guests at deluxe resorts. Standard and value resort guests can only enjoy early entry. For many families, it feels like another example of Disney catering to those who spend more.

A Lasting Shift

Disney had no choice but to close in 2020, but the aftermath brought changes that still shape the parks today. Higher prices, fewer perks, and missing experiences have made some fans nostalgic for the “old” Disney World. While new attractions keep drawing crowds, many say the decision that started it all—the closure—changed Disney forever.

Andrew Boardwine

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
