5 Things You Can’t Do at Magic Kingdom in 2025
Every year brings updates to Walt Disney World, but 2025 is shaping up to be one of the biggest transition years in recent memory. With new lands like Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park on the horizon and refurbishments underway, Disney has some major changes in the works.
Here are five things you can’t do at Magic Kingdom: either temporarily or permanently.
1. The Liberty Belle and Tom Sawyer Island
As of early July, Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Belle Riverboat sailed into Disney history. Their closure clears the way for a new Cars-themed area called Piston Peak National Park, which is expected to open in 2028 or 2029, followed by the long-awaited Villains Land. If you were hoping to explore the island or take a calm riverboat ride, you’re out of luck. This one’s permanent.
2. The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure
Planning to ride through Ariel’s world? Double-check your dates. Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid will be closed for a short time—July 21 through July 26—for scheduled maintenance. If you visit that week, this gentle dark ride won’t be part of your plans.
3. Parade Spots
Even the Festival of Fantasy Parade feels different now. Many classic viewing spots have been blocked off due to construction around Frontierland’s expansion. Main Street, U.S.A. remains the go-to choice, but it’s definitely more crowded than usual as guests compete for the remaining clear sightlines.
So now, you’ll either have to scope out a new viewing location or grab a spot much earlier than usual. The parade is still happening daily, but that perfect curbside seat you loved? It might be hidden behind construction walls this year.
4. Buzz Lightyear Is Going Dark
Starting August 4, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will also be closed for an extended refurbishment. Disney is promising some real improvements, including better visuals and more accurate targets. No return date has been set, but signs indicate a 2026 comeback. While this is a tragic missed attraction for Magic Kingdom guests, the ride certainly needs some refurbishment.
5. Big Thunder Is Under Construction
It might still look intact outside, but Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed since January. Disney is revamping the entire attraction with smoother tracks and enhanced effects. It’s not scheduled to reopen until 2026, so thrill seekers will have to find their adrenaline rush elsewhere.
Big Changes For Your Next Visit
Whether you’re a frequent visitor or a first-timer, checking what’s closed before your trip is always wise. Magic Kingdom is definitely in a transitional period—but in true Disney fashion, something magical is almost always waiting around the corner.
