Disney Parks Fans Debate After Muppet*Vision 3D Called Misogynistic, Outdated

As Disney’s Hollywood Studios prepares to close Muppet*Vision 3D permanently, Disney Parks fans are engaging in a heated debate about the attraction’s humor. A Walt Disney World guest called the attraction misogynistic and outdated, sparking a broader conversation about the relevancy of the decades-old show, its humor, and its place in the modern Disney Park experience.

At the 2024 D23 Expo, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro officially confirmed the long-rumored replacement of The Muppets Courtyard with a new Monsters, Inc. (2001) area. The new land, which will feature a Monsters, Inc. door coaster, will replace Muppet*Vision 3D, as well as Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano and PizzeRizzo. While many fans are sad to see the Muppets go, others feel the attraction’s humor has become outdated, sparking a divide among Disney enthusiasts.

The Muppet*Vision 3D show debuted at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (then Disney-MGM Studios) in 1991 and was one of the last projects overseen by Jim Henson before his death. Many Disney fans have cherished the attraction as a tribute to Henson’s creativity and the beloved Muppet characters. However, as Walt Disney World Resort prepares for the attraction’s final performance on June 7, 2025, some Disney fans are expressing dissatisfaction with certain elements of the show that they feel no longer resonate with today’s audiences.

One Disney Park guest, posting under the username u/narmire on Reddit, voiced their opinion that Muppet*Vision 3D’s humor is problematic and no longer suitable for modern audiences.

“I’m not sorry Muppet Vision is leaving,” they wrote. “It needed to be revamped at the very least – upskirt jokes aren’t funny. (Seriously – I know Ms Piggy has a shtick where she’s uptight and arrogant, but that just makes it worse that the jokes she is involved with are about showing her underwear or ripping her skirt off).”

The Disney Park guest went on to express their frustration after recently watching the show: “I was really disappointed watching the show today, I remembered it being funny and the dated jokes ruined my experience. I was looking forward to going and then was very disappointed when her skirt was torn off in the finale and I was supposed to laugh at it.”

This post quickly sparked a wave of responses, with some fans agreeing that the show is outdated.

“I absolutely love the Muppets and I will be sad it’s leaving,” u/nowhereman136 commented. “However, it is pretty dated. The show has been running for 30 years and it looks it. The jokes are getting bland, Waldo is annoying, and the Muppets in general have just evolved since then. The saving grace of the show is that it’s the last thing Jim Henson personally worked on with the Muppets before he died. So this show still going is like Henson himself still going. But it’s time for change.”

However, the user’s criticism of the show didn’t sit well with many other Disney Parks fans, some of whom defended Muppet*Vision 3D and its humor.

“Comedy and humor cannot be judged by our current norms but by the norms of the context in which the joke was written,” u/VeshWolfe argued. “Viewing so many great comics through a modern eye makes them seem distasteful but their jokes were a product of what was acceptable during that time. To ignore that or throw that out is to remove art and that is a horrible thing to do.”

Such a weird take over a puppet pig,” u/fallinginfoam replied.

Although Muppet*Vision 3D is closing, the Muppets are not abandoning Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed plans to retheme Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith into a Muppets-themed attraction, although the timeline for that change has not been announced.
