New ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 Information Comes To Light After Recast Confirmation
Shortly after Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy addressed rumors about her future at the company, new details have emerged about the next chapter of the Star Wars franchise—both on the big screen and Disney+.
One of the biggest updates centers around Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. The film will be the first Star Wars theatrical release since Star Wars: Episode IX–The Rise of Skywalker (2019), bringing the beloved Disney+ characters to the big screen.
While it remains unclear whether the film will replace The Mandalorian Season 4 on streaming, its placement in the franchise suggests it will explore the fallout from Ahsoka Season 1—particularly the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and Jedi Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) from the distant planet Peridea.
The New Republic era has been a major focal point of Lucasfilm’s expansion, spanning The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew. And that momentum isn’t slowing down. Alongside The Mandalorian and Grogu, Dave Filoni’s planned Mando-Verse crossover film and Ahsoka Season 2 are in the works, solidifying the era’s importance in the post-Return of the Jedi (1983) timeline.
In an interview with Deadline, Kennedy reinforced that focus:
“And Mandalorian really stands on its own because there, we’re dealing with a whole other era in the New Republic. We have other development going on in that space as well. So that’s the space that we’re pretty much focused on right at the moment, because obviously with Mandalorian we have a pretty good sense of where that’s going.”
Meanwhile, Ahsoka Season 2 continues to take shape. The series, which debuted in 2023 with Rosario Dawson reprising her role as Ahsoka Tano, received mixed reactions, particularly regarding its handling of the fan-favorite character’s live-action arc. However, its impact on Star Wars canon was significant, introducing new elements like Peridea and characters such as Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno).
Despite uncertainty surrounding its cast, production on Ahsoka Season 2 is moving forward. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman (via The Direct), filming is set to begin in April 2025, with two new female supporting roles currently being cast. Whether these additions will be original characters or ones pulled from Star Wars: The Clone Wars or Star Wars Rebels remains to be seen.
Returning cast members are expected to include Natasha Liu Bordizzo (Sabine Wren), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Hera Syndulla), and Eman Esfandi (Ezra Bridger). Additionally, Game of Thrones alum Rory McCann will step into the role of Baylan Skoll, following the passing of Ray Stevenson in May 2023.
Beyond Ahsoka, Kennedy provided insight into Star Wars’ theatrical roadmap. Following The Mandalorian and Grogu, the next film in line will be helmed by Shawn Levy. Set roughly five years after the events of Disney’s sequel trilogy, the standalone project is rumored to star Academy Award-nominee Ryan Gosling, though no official confirmation has been made.
Further expanding the franchise’s future, projects from James Mangold and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remain in development, alongside a new trilogy from X-Men producer Simon Kinberg. Kennedy expressed enthusiasm for Kinberg’s vision, hinting at an exciting new saga beyond the Skywalker storyline.
“We’re absolutely rolling fast and furiously. That has gone exceptionally well, and he’s literally going to script as we speak,” Kennedy told Deadline. “We’ll see something probably around June. Simon, if you remember, he did some work with us years ago with the animated show, which was a really wonderful collaborative experience.”
While Lucasfilm continues to navigate its post-Skywalker era, the New Republic timeline is proving to be a significant bridge between past and future. With multiple projects in motion and a return to theaters on the horizon, Star Wars is setting the stage for its next evolution.
