Walt Disney World fans have learned that an attraction announcement doesn’t always guarantee an opening day.
Disney has revealed plenty of ambitious concepts throughout its history, particularly at EPCOT. Some eventually became attractions, while others disappeared after Disney released artwork and shared details with guests.
Three projects stand out today because they once appeared to have a place in EPCOT’s future but never became reality.
Those plans involved Mary Poppins, the PLAY! Pavilion, and another potential World Showcase country.
Mary Poppins Never Arrived at EPCOT
Disney created plenty of excitement at the 2019 D23 Expo when Dick Van Dyke helped announce a Mary Poppins addition for EPCOT’s United Kingdom Pavilion.
The project would have expanded the pavilion with a recreation of Cherry Tree Lane from the Mary Poppins films.
Disney didn’t keep the idea behind closed doors. Concept art showed what the area could look like, and the project appeared in EPCOT’s preview center alongside other pieces of the park’s transformation.
Plans eventually called for an indoor teacup-style attraction.
Then the pandemic changed Disney’s plans.
Construction around EPCOT stopped during the park’s temporary closure in 2020. When Disney resumed its transformation work, the Mary Poppins project didn’t return with it.
Disney eventually said development had been postponed while long-term projects were reevaluated.
Years have passed without the attraction returning to Disney’s announced plans, leaving the United Kingdom Pavilion without the ride that once appeared headed its way.
PLAY! Pavilion Disappears
The PLAY! Pavilion followed a similar path.
Disney announced the project in 2019 as a replacement for the long-unused Wonders of Life pavilion.
Instead of focusing on one major attraction, PLAY! would have created an interactive futuristic city featuring Disney characters and technology-driven experiences.
Concept art made the pavilion look like a significant piece of EPCOT’s future.
But construction never seemed to gain momentum after the park reopened.
Disney removed PLAY! Pavilion from EPCOT guide maps in 2023 and said the concept was being reevaluated. By 2026, Disney had also removed the PLAY! Pavilion flag from the park’s central plaza.
The pavilion guests saw in those original plans never opened.
World Showcase Remains Unchanged
Another long-running EPCOT idea also appears unlikely to happen anytime soon.
Disney has considered numerous countries for World Showcase over the decades, including Spain, Costa Rica, Israel, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, Venezuela, and others.
Some concepts went surprisingly far.
A Switzerland pavilion could have featured a Matterhorn Bobsleds-style attraction, while Spain was considered for a pavilion featuring a boat ride, restaurant, and film.
Yet none were built.
Norway remains the last country added to World Showcase, meaning EPCOT has gone nearly four decades without another nation joining the lineup.
Disney’s modern development strategy also relies heavily on established characters and franchises, making another traditional country pavilion seem increasingly unlikely.
Still, Disney has shown that old EPCOT ideas aren’t always gone forever.
Spaceship Earth plans that appeared abandoned after 2020 resurfaced in a revised form in 2026. Disney also surprised longtime fans by confirming Dreamfinder’s return.
For now, though, Mary Poppins, PLAY! Pavilion, and another traditional World Showcase country remain three EPCOT projects that guests may never experience.
