Universal’s Replacement Options Revealed for Lost Continent Closure

Universal Orlando is saying goodbye to one of its longest-running lands. The Lost Continent at Islands of Adventure, once a cornerstone of the park when it opened in 1999, is finally being retired. Demolition permits have been filed, and Universal has confirmed construction activity is coming soon. For longtime fans, it marks the end of an era, but it also signals the start of something much larger.

The globe, set amidst a misty fountain, hints at the excitement of Epic Universe to come, along with Universal Horror Unleashed, next to Disney World.

The Lost Continent once showcased the mythology of gods, beasts, and ancient adventures. Over the years, though, its attractions disappeared. The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad closed in 2018, and Poseidon’s Fury followed in 2023. Today, what remains are a handful of dining locations and a shop. Compared to neighboring areas like Hogsmeade and Jurassic Park, the land has been reduced to a quiet corner with little to offer. Universal’s decision to reimagine the space is no surprise.

What makes this transformation exciting is the list of rumored replacements. At the top of the list is The Lord of the Rings. The Tolkien-inspired world has long been rumored to appear at a Universal park, and the Lost Continent would provide a natural fit. Fans have often said the transition from Hogsmeade into Middle-earth would feel seamless, with medieval fantasy themes already in place. Though Universal has not confirmed the rights, the franchise remains a strong contender.

The second big possibility is The Legend of Zelda. Since Universal already partners with Nintendo, many fans expected Zelda to join the Orlando parks. Its temples, dungeons, and mythical creatures align perfectly with the architecture of the Lost Continent. Despite reports suggesting Zelda may not be the final choice, it still lingers as one of the most talked-about options. Nintendo’s presence in Orlando is only expected to grow, and Zelda would be a fitting addition.

Finally, Universal could expand what it already has. Because the Lost Continent sits between Seuss Landing, Jurassic Park, and Hogsmeade, the land could serve as an extension to one or more of those areas. A Grinch-themed attraction would blend naturally into Seuss Landing, while another Wizarding World addition would capitalize on the enduring popularity of Harry Potter. Expanding the Potter universe feels especially plausible given its role as Universal’s most successful property.

Universal executives have made it clear that intellectual properties are driving the future of the parks. Whether it’s Middle-earth, Zelda, or an expansion of Harry Potter, the transformation of the Lost Continent will be one of the most significant changes Islands of Adventure has ever seen. The only certainty now is that the Lost Continent is about to vanish, making way for something bigger than ever before.
