Universal Studios is preparing to close one of its most popular stunt shows.
WaterWorld: A Live Sea War Spectacular first opened at Universal Studios Hollywood on October 21, 1995, and has since expanded to three more Universal theme parks around the world.

Located on the park’s Upper Lot, the show features jet ski chases, explosions, gunfights, and a spectacular plane crash. The action takes place on an elaborate flooded set, with performers battling for control of a floating settlement while guests watch from a large outdoor arena.
The attraction is based on the 1995 film Waterworld, starring Kevin Costner. While the movie received mixed reviews and became notorious for its enormous production budget, the Universal Studios attraction proved far more popular. It even received a prestigious Thea Award in 1996.
Its success led Universal to introduce versions at Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Singapore, and Universal Studios Beijing. Despite being based on a movie released more than 30 years ago, WaterWorld continues to attract large crowds across the company’s international theme parks.
However, Universal has now confirmed that one version of the attraction will close for several weeks later this year.

Universal Confirms Month-Long WaterWorld Closure
Universal Studios Japan has announced that WaterWorld will close on November 28, 2026, with the attraction remaining unavailable until December 27.
According to the park’s official refurbishment calendar, the show is scheduled to reopen on December 28, although dates remain subject to change. That means guests visiting Universal Studios Japan throughout most of December will miss out on the live performance.
The attraction has been a fixture at the Osaka theme park since it opened on March 31, 2001. Located in its own dedicated area, WaterWorld features a large outdoor arena capable of accommodating more than 3,000 spectators.
Much like its Hollywood counterpart – which also closed temporarily for a refurbishment earlier this year – the Japanese version follows the Mariner as he battles the Smokers, a group of pirates searching for the mythical Dryland. The 20-minute performance includes high-speed stunts, pyrotechnics, and plenty of opportunities for guests in the front rows to get soaked.

Fortunately, this closure is temporary. Universal hasn’t announced any plans to permanently remove WaterWorld from Universal Studios Japan, with the upcoming shutdown instead appearing on its schedule of temporary attraction closures.
The park also hasn’t confirmed exactly what work will take place during the month-long closure.
This isn’t the first time WaterWorld has closed during the winter. In December 2025, the attraction reportedly underwent a similar refurbishment between December 8 and December 24.
The timing makes sense considering Osaka’s winter weather. December temperatures typically average highs of around 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius) and lows of 42 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius), making it one of the less appealing months to sit through an outdoor show where audience members can get drenched (and with Universal Studios Japan previously introducing an umbrella ban).
Guests visiting Universal Studios Japan during the closure will still have plenty of alternatives, including The Flying Dinosaur, Hollywood Dream – The Ride, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.
Universal Continues To Invest in WaterWorld After 30 Years
Although WaterWorld is one of Universal’s older attractions, the company has continued to update the stunt show over the years.
In June 2018, Universal Studios Japan reopened its version following a major refurbishment. The overhaul introduced enhanced stunts, upgraded pyrotechnics, and a new 3D sound system designed to make the action even more immersive.

The attraction also received a new lease on life when Universal Studios Beijing opened in September 2021. Unlike the other Universal parks, Beijing features an entire WaterWorld themed land, complete with the stunt show, restaurants, and additional entertainment.
There’s also speculation that WaterWorld could eventually make its way to another Universal theme park.
Universal United Kingdom Resort, currently planned to open in Bedfordshire, England, in 2031, has been the subject of extensive speculation since the company first revealed its plans to build a theme park in the country.
Early concept art has prompted rumors of several potential themed lands, including areas inspired by Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and Paddington. WaterWorld has also been mentioned as a possible addition to the resort.

However, Universal hasn’t officially confirmed any of these attractions, meaning there’s no guarantee that WaterWorld will feature in the finished park.
For now, the show remains operational at Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Singapore, and Universal Studios Beijing, with no corresponding closures announced at those locations.
As for Universal Studios Japan, guests will have until November 27 to experience WaterWorld before its temporary shutdown. The attraction is currently scheduled to welcome audiences back on December 28, just in time for the final days of 2026.
