Universal Reveals Free After-Hours Holiday Event This December—With One Critical Catch

Christmas is coming to Universal Studios Hollywood, and the theme park has a special surprise planned for guests hoping to enjoy the festivities after dark.

While thousands of visitors will head to the Southern California destination for its seasonal entertainment, Universal is preparing something beyond its traditional holiday offerings.

For two nights in December, the park will welcome a limited group of visitors for an exclusive four-hour celebration. Even better, those attending won’t need to purchase an additional event ticket.

However, Universal isn’t extending this opportunity to everyone. Guests must meet certain requirements, and even those who qualify could miss out if they don’t act quickly enough.

Universal Sets December Dates for Special Christmas Celebration

Universal Studios Hollywood has scheduled its Pass Member Holiday Park Takeover for December 1 and 2, 2026.

Both nights will feature exclusive park access between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., allowing participants to experience Universal’s festive atmosphere during a special evening event.

The takeover arrives shortly after the park begins its annual holiday celebration on November 21. Christmas festivities will continue through January 3, 2027.

This year’s lineup includes several familiar experiences alongside a brand-new addition.

Illumination’s Merry Minions will debut, bringing the popular animated characters to the seasonal celebration.

Grinchmas will also return, giving visitors another opportunity to encounter Dr. Seuss’ Christmas character.

Over in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, guests can enjoy seasonal decorations and entertainment as the land celebrates Christmas.

Universal is also bringing holiday touches to SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, including decorations and special character encounters.

Although these offerings are part of the broader Christmas celebration, Universal hasn’t promised that every attraction or seasonal experience will operate during the December takeover.

The Holiday Takeover Has Happened Before

Universal Studios Hollywood has previously offered its Pass Member community a similar Christmas experience.

In 2023, the park hosted a holiday takeover on November 28 and 29, allowing eligible guests to enjoy exclusive access from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.

The event gave participants a chance to visit outside regular park hours while enjoying the seasonal atmosphere.

Three years later, Universal is returning to that format with another two-night celebration.

This time, the event falls during the opening weeks of the Christmas season, before the busiest holiday travel period begins.

For visitors who enjoy experiencing theme parks in the evening, the takeover provides a different opportunity to explore Universal’s decorated areas.

Still, the event comes with limitations that could prevent some guests from attending.

Not Every Universal Guest Can Claim Free Admission

The biggest restriction involves who can actually enter the park for the special celebration.

Universal Studios Hollywood is reserving the December takeover exclusively for its Annual and Season Pass Members.

Guests who purchase standard admission tickets won’t receive access to the event simply because they’re visiting Universal that day.

And even qualifying Pass Members have another hurdle to clear.

Because Universal is limiting attendance, everyone hoping to participate must secure a reservation.

The reservation process begins after 11 a.m. on November 4, 2026, through the official Universal Studios Hollywood Pass Member website.

Pass Members who obtain reservations can attend without paying an additional event admission fee, provided they present their valid passes.

However, available spaces could fill before everyone interested has an opportunity to register.

That makes November 4 an important date for Pass Members hoping to enjoy the exclusive Christmas experience.

Universal’s Holiday Celebration Extends Beyond Two Nights

Guests who aren’t eligible for the takeover will still have opportunities to celebrate Christmas at Universal Studios Hollywood.

The park’s regular holiday programming includes festive entertainment, seasonal food and drinks, themed merchandise, and appearances by familiar characters.

Visitors can explore decorated areas throughout the park while enjoying the returning Christmas experiences.

Universal CityWalk Hollywood will also get into the holiday spirit with a Christmas tree, festive decorations, seasonal food, and special merchandise.

And with the celebration running until January 3, 2027, families won’t have to plan their entire holiday visit around the two takeover dates.

For Annual and Season Pass Members, however, the December event offers an extra opportunity to experience the park after hours.

Admission is complimentary, but Universal’s rules are clear: guests must have an eligible pass and a confirmed reservation.

Anyone hoping to attend should keep those requirements in mind before making plans for December 1 or 2.
