Universal Orlando’s Thrill Ride Obsession Could Be Hurting Its Biggest Opportunity

Universal Orlando has spent years building some of the most exciting attractions in the theme park industry. From massive roller coasters to immersive experiences inspired by popular movies, the resort knows how to get guests talking.

But there’s one area where Universal still has some catching up to do.

While thrill seekers have plenty of reasons to visit, families with younger children, grandparents, or guests who aren’t interested in intense attractions may have a harder time finding experiences everyone can enjoy together.

And if Universal wants to become a serious alternative to Walt Disney World for an entire vacation, that’s something it needs to address.

Epic Universe Is Moving Universal in the Right Direction

When Epic Universe opened in May 2025, it introduced a different approach to Universal’s theme park experience.

Yes, the park features major thrill rides, but it also offers plenty of opportunities for guests to enjoy themselves without boarding a high-speed attraction.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk includes character encounters, a live stage show, interactive play areas, and attractions designed for different age groups.

Meanwhile, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD gives families the opportunity to explore a colorful environment inspired by Nintendo’s most recognizable characters. Yoshi’s Adventure also provides a gentler option for guests who aren’t ready for more intense experiences.

These additions are important because not every family member wants the same thing from a theme park vacation.

Parents with small children might prioritize character experiences, while teenagers head straight for the biggest roller coasters. Grandparents may prefer shows, shopping, or simply exploring the themed environments.

Epic Universe shows that Universal understands the importance of giving everyone something to enjoy.

Unfortunately, that approach needs to extend beyond its newest park.

Universal’s Older Parks Still Have a Problem

Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure certainly aren’t lacking family-friendly experiences.

However, many of their biggest attractions focus on speed, drops, motion simulation, or other intense elements that won’t appeal to every visitor.

Consider Islands of Adventure, where attractions like Jurassic World VelociCoaster, The Incredible Hulk Coaster, and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure attract enormous attention.

These rides are excellent for guests who love thrills, but they aren’t necessarily ideal for families traveling with younger children.

Universal Studios Florida faces a similar challenge with its collection of simulator-based attractions and high-energy experiences.

That doesn’t mean Universal should stop building roller coasters. Those attractions help distinguish the resort from Disney World.

Instead, Universal needs to offer more alternatives so families don’t spend their vacations constantly separating into different groups.

Disney World Has an Advantage Universal Can’t Ignore

One reason Walt Disney World remains such a popular family destination is its variety.

Guests can enjoy classic dark rides, character meet-and-greets, stage shows, boat rides, and interactive experiences without needing to meet height requirements for every attraction.

Magic Kingdom, in particular, offers numerous experiences that parents, children, and grandparents can enjoy together.

Universal doesn’t need to recreate Magic Kingdom. In fact, trying to become another Disney World could take away what makes Universal special.

But adding more family-friendly dark rides, elaborate walkthroughs, and live entertainment could make a tremendous difference.

These experiences would also give guests more options when popular thrill rides experience lengthy waits or unexpected downtime.

Universal’s Next Big Investment Should Include Everyone

With Epic Universe now operating, Universal has an opportunity to rethink what a complete resort vacation should look like.

More family attractions at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida could help the company appeal to visitors who might otherwise spend most of their vacation at Disney.

Expanded entertainment, interactive environments, and experiences without major height restrictions could also encourage families to stay longer.

Universal has already proven it can compete with Disney when it comes to innovation and excitement.

Now, it needs to prove that everyone in the family can be part of that excitement.

Until then, Disney World will continue to hold an important advantage when families decide where to spend their vacation money.
