Universal Orlando Invokes ‘Retro Roots’ for Fast & Furious Replacement, 4 Icons Emerge

Universal Studios Florida is preparing to shut down one of the most divisive attractions in the park’s modern history, and fans are already throwing out ideas for what should replace it. After years of criticism and countless jokes online, Fast & Furious: Supercharged is officially set to close permanently in 2027.

The closure has created a wave of speculation across the theme park community. Universal has not revealed what will take over the large attraction space, but many longtime guests think the company has a major opportunity sitting right in front of it.

And lately, Universal seems more interested than ever in revisiting its past.

Fast & Furious Is Getting a Fresh Start

Even though Supercharged is closing, the Fast & Furious franchise is staying at Universal Orlando Resort.

Universal already confirmed that Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift will open in 2027 in the former Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit space. The new coaster is expected to feature launches, 360-degree drifting, and a massive vertical spike stretching high above the CityWalk skyline.

The project already sounds far more intense than Supercharged ever was.

Many guests felt the current ride never captured the energy of the films. Instead of high-speed action and practical thrills, the attraction became known for its projection screens and its strange “family party” finale.

Now, Universal will eventually have an enormous indoor attraction building available for something entirely new.

That possibility has fans dreaming big.

Universal Keeps Leaning Into Nostalgia

Over the past few years, Universal Orlando Resort has started embracing its classic movie history in a much bigger way.

The Universal Mega Movie Parade helped spark that conversation. Instead of relying entirely on newer franchises, the parade brought older films like Jaws (1975), Back to the Future (1985), Jurassic Park (1993), and Ghostbusters (1984) back into the spotlight.

Guests immediately connected with it.

Retro merchandise has also become a much larger part of the parks. Old attraction references, vintage logos, and classic movie designs now appear throughout Universal Orlando Resort.

Because of that, many fans believe the replacement for Fast & Furious: Supercharged could end up pulling directly from the resort’s older franchises.

Back to the Future and JAWS Keep Leading the Discussion

One of the strongest fan-favorite possibilities remains Back to the Future (1985).

Back to the Future: The Ride still holds legendary status among longtime Universal fans, even decades after its closure. Many guests think a modern indoor dark ride could finally bring the franchise back in a much larger way.

Universal could combine motion vehicles, practical sets, projection technology, and large-scale effects to send riders through different timelines alongside Marty McFly and Doc Brown.

At the same time, Jaws (1975) continues to gain momentum among fans.

The original JAWS attraction remains one of the most beloved rides Universal ever created. A new indoor version could use animatronics, water effects, and immersive environments to create a much more intense shark survival experience while still honoring the original attraction’s legacy.

And honestly, both franchises fit perfectly with Universal’s recent nostalgia push.

Twister and Ghostbusters Could Also Work

Some fans believe Universal could also revisit the old Twister concept.

Before newer attractions arrived, Twister gave guests a chance to watch giant tornado effects unfold inside massive soundstages. Now, with Twisters (2024) helping revive interest in the franchise, the timing suddenly feels much better for a comeback.

Universal could create another practical-effects-heavy attraction or even a dark ride where guests race through storms while tracking tornadoes and protecting Dorothy devices.

Then there is Ghostbusters (1984), which many guests believe best fits the space overall.

Universal has already shown renewed interest in the franchise through entertainment offerings and parade appearances. A Ghostbusters dark ride could send riders through haunted hotels, city streets, subway tunnels, and containment facilities while spirits escape across New York City.

The mix of comedy, scares, and practical effects could make the attraction a perfect fit for Universal Studios Florida.

The Closure Feels Bigger Than One Ride

Universal has not confirmed what comes next after Fast & Furious: Supercharged closes. Still, many fans believe this decision represents something much larger for the future of Universal Studios Florida.

The company continues pushing forward with major new technology and attractions through projects like Epic Universe. At the same time, Universal also appears more focused on reconnecting with the films and experiences that originally built the park’s identity.

Whether the replacement becomes Back to the Future (1985), Jaws (1975), Twister (1996), Ghostbusters (1984), or something entirely unexpected, one thing has become very clear.

Guests want more of Universal’s classic era back.
