Universal’s Gonna Need a Bigger Boat: Iconic ‘Jaws’ Ride Rumored to Return After 14-Year Closure

Universal Orlando Resort has spent the last few years expanding at a pace that feels almost nonstop. Between the opening of Epic Universe, the arrival of new attractions across the parks, and major upgrades to older areas, Universal has pushed itself into a completely different category of entertainment destination. But while the company continues chasing the future, many fans have started noticing something else happening at the same time.

Universal appears increasingly interested in its past.

That nostalgia has become more visible through retro merchandise, classic movie references, and even entire themed lands built around older Universal properties. Now, fans believe one legendary franchise could be preparing for a much larger comeback inside Universal Studios Florida.

And oddly enough, one of the resort’s most criticized attractions may create the perfect opportunity for it to happen.

Jaws Never Really Left Universal

For longtime Universal fans, Jaws was more than just another ride. The attraction became one of the defining experiences at Universal Studios Florida long before Harry Potter arrived and changed the resort forever.

Guests boarded tour boats through Amity Island before suddenly finding themselves face-to-face with a massive shark attack. The ride mixed practical effects, live skipper performances, explosions, and giant animatronics in a way that felt incredibly immersive for its time.

Unfortunately, the attraction also became notoriously difficult to maintain.

Operating huge shark animatronics underwater every day created constant technical issues, and Universal ultimately shut the ride down in 2012 to make room for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley.

Even now, though, fans continue talking about the attraction almost nonstop. Many guests still see Jaws as one of the best examples of practical theme park storytelling Universal ever created.

Universal Has Started Leaning Into Nostalgia

The growing rumors about Jaws do not seem entirely random.

Universal has spent the last several years embracing its older franchises more aggressively. Epic Universe introduced Dark Universe, an entire land centered around Universal Classic Monsters. Across the resort, retro apparel and legacy merchandise have become extremely popular with guests.

The Universal Legacy Store also continues celebrating older attractions and films connected to the resort’s history.

Universal clearly understands that longtime fans still care deeply about the company’s older properties. That is a major reason why speculation around Jaws has continued growing over the past year.

The franchise still has enormous recognition, and Universal never fully removed it from the park.

Amity Island Still Exists in Small Ways

Even after Jaws closed, Universal kept pieces of the franchise alive inside Universal Studios Florida.

The massive hanging shark photo spot near the San Francisco area remains one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks. Guests constantly stop there for pictures, and smaller nods to Amity Island still exist nearby.

Universal pushed even harder into that nostalgia during summer 2025.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jaws (1975), the resort introduced a limited-time “Little Amity” experience near Chez Alcatraz. The area featured themed snacks, merchandise, props, and decorative elements inspired by the classic shark film.

Fans immediately noticed where Universal placed the experience.

The company could have celebrated the movie almost anywhere on the property, but it specifically chose an area directly connected to the old attraction. That decision quickly fueled rumors that Universal may be testing guest interest for a larger Jaws revival.

Fast & Furious Could Open the Door

The rumors gained even more attention once Universal confirmed that Fast & Furious: Supercharged will permanently close in 2027.

The attraction struggled with fan reception for years, with many guests criticizing its heavy use of screens and lack of excitement. Universal’s announcement of Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift for Universal Studios Hollywood only intensified those conversations, since the new coaster appears far more ambitious.

Now, Universal suddenly has a massive attraction space becoming available near the remaining Jaws iconography in the San Francisco section of the park.

Naturally, fans started connecting the dots almost immediately.

A New Jaws Ride Could Look Very Different

If Jaws ever returns, it likely would not simply recreate the original attraction.

Universal has recently explored advanced ride technology using magnetic movement systems that make animated creatures appear to crawl across ride vehicles. The patent specifically references smaller animals, such as frogs and snakes, but fans have already imagined how the concept could evolve further.

A modern Jaws attraction could potentially feature a shark animatronic launching onto the front of a ride vehicle before guests “fight back” during the finale.

That approach would allow Universal to preserve the practical intensity of the original attraction while avoiding many of the underwater maintenance problems that plagued the first ride.

Nothing has been confirmed yet. Still, with Universal embracing nostalgia more than ever and a major attraction space opening soon, fans suddenly feel more hopeful about Jaws than they have in years.
