Tragedy Strikes ‘Emily in Paris’ Set as Crew Member Dies During Filming

The excitement surrounding Netflix’s Emily in Paris continues to build as fans eagerly await the upcoming season, set to be filmed in Italy. However, a dark cloud has now loomed over the production of the hit series after the tragic passing of a beloved crew member.

Assistant director Diego Borella, 47, collapsed unexpectedly while filming in Venice on August 21, 2025. Despite immediate efforts to revive him on set, paramedics were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the Emily in Paris production family, leaving both the cast and crew devastated.

According to reports from La Repubblica and other outlets, Borella’s death occurred during preparations for a final scene inside the renowned Hotel Danieli in Venice. Local authorities confirmed that he likely passed away due to a sudden heart attack. Medical professionals on-site worked tirelessly to revive him, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.

A spokesperson for Paramount Television Studios, which produces the show, issued a brief statement. “We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family. Our hearts go out to the individual’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Diego Borella, a well-known assistant director in Italy, had a long and distinguished career in film and television. His work spanned multiple countries, with training stints in Rome, London, and New York. Recently, he had been expanding his creative pursuits, dedicating time to writing poetry, fairy tales, and stories for children.

The devastating news caused an immediate halt to production, with filming on Emily in Paris temporarily suspended. However, production has already resumed as of August 23, just days after Borella’s tragic death.

This unfortunate incident has occurred amidst the filming of the fifth season of Emily in Paris, which will primarily take place in Italy. While fans eagerly await the season’s premiere on December 18, the events leading up to this devastating loss have cast a shadow over the vibrant escapades of Emily Cooper.

Season five will showcase Emily’s transition to her new role as head of Agence Grateau Rome, where she faces both professional and personal obstacles in the heart of Italy.

Alongside Lily Collins reprising her role as Emily Cooper, Ashley Park returns as Mindy Chen, Lucas Bravo as Gabriel, and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu as Sylvie.

Bruno Gouery (Luc), William Abadie (Antoine), Lucien Laviscount (Alfie), Samuel Arnold (Julien), and Eugenio Franceschini (Marcello) will also be back for the new season.
