Tower of Terror Suddenly Surrounded by Construction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Guests walking down Sunset Boulevard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios this week may notice that one of the park’s most famous attractions suddenly looks a little different. While The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror remains open and fully operational, Disney has officially started visible refurbishment work in the attraction’s outdoor queue area, bringing construction scrims and temporary coverings directly into guest view.
For an attraction as iconic as Tower of Terror, even relatively small cosmetic changes tend to get noticed immediately. The ride sits at the end of Sunset Boulevard like a looming centerpiece for the entire park, and longtime Disney fans know the Hollywood Tower Hotel’s eerie atmosphere is part of what makes the experience so memorable from the second you walk toward it.
Now, construction has officially arrived at the attraction.

Construction Work Appears Throughout Queue Area
Disney has begun refurbishment work on several decorative columns located throughout the covered outdoor queue for Tower of Terror. Temporary construction boxes and scrims now surround multiple column bases, while nearby untouched sections still show the attraction’s original decorative theming.
At the moment, the work does not appear to be causing major operational issues for guests entering the ride. The queue remains open, and Disney has not announced any closure plans tied to the project.
Still, the sudden appearance of construction materials throughout the attraction entrance has already started drawing attention from regular parkgoers.
Because Tower of Terror relies so heavily on detailed theming and atmosphere, even maintenance projects become noticeable quickly. The overgrown gardens, cracked stonework, faded architecture, and abandoned hotel aesthetic all work together to establish the story before guests ever reach the library scene inside.
That means Disney has to carefully balance refurbishment work while preserving the illusion that the Hollywood Tower Hotel has been frozen in time for decades.
Disney Continues Maintaining Classic Attractions
Tower of Terror first opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios back in 1994 and remains one of the most beloved thrill attractions Disney has ever created. Unlike many modern rides that rely heavily on screens, Tower of Terror combines practical effects, physical sets, randomized drop sequences, and immersive storytelling inspired by The Twilight Zonetelevision series.
Even with newer rides like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attracting massive crowds, Tower of Terror still regularly posts some of the highest wait times in the park.
That continued popularity is likely part of why Disney stays aggressive about upkeep around the attraction.
Older attractions often require ongoing refurbishment projects behind the scenes, especially in Florida’s intense heat, humidity, and rain. Exterior structures around Tower of Terror constantly face weather exposure, which can wear down themed surfaces over time.
Disney reportedly filed a permit connected to the attraction earlier this year, and the current work appears to line up with that timeline.
Guests Could Eventually See Queue Changes
Right now, the current construction footprint remains fairly limited. Guests can still move through the outdoor queue without major reroutes or disruptions.
However, that could change depending on how extensive the refurbishment becomes over the next several weeks.
Some sections of the queue already feature larger wrapped areas around corners and tighter pathways. If Disney expands the work zone, temporary rerouting measures may eventually become necessary to keep crowds moving safely through the attraction entrance.
That wouldn’t be unusual for Walt Disney World. Disney frequently handles projects in phases specifically so rides can remain open while construction continues nearby.
In many cases, guests barely notice the changes unless they regularly visit the parks or closely follow ongoing refurbishment projects.
Still, for Tower of Terror fans, any visible construction around the attraction tends to spark conversation quickly.

Sunset Boulevard Continues To Evolve
The latest Tower of Terror refurbishment arrives during a period where Disney’s Hollywood Studios continues evolving around both classic and modern attractions.
Sunset Boulevard itself remains one of the park’s most recognizable areas thanks to the combination of Tower of Terror, Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster, and Fantasmic! nearby. Even as Disney expands newer intellectual properties throughout the park, this corner of Hollywood Studios still carries much of the park’s original identity.
That’s one reason Disney tends to avoid major visible disruptions whenever possible in this section of the park.
For now, guests visiting Hollywood Studios should simply expect to see construction scrims, wrapped columns, and active refurbishment work throughout portions of the Tower of Terror queue.
The ride itself remains fully operational, but the attraction’s entrance area officially looks very different than it did just days ago
