‘Star Wars’ TV Series Seemingly Finished, New Update Reveals

Few Star Wars characters have generated as much excitement for a Disney+ series as Boba Fett.

After making his long-awaited return in The Mandalorian (2019), the iconic bounty hunter finally received his own spinoff in The Book of Boba Fett (2021). At the time, the project appeared to be another major step in Lucasfilm’s rapidly expanding streaming universe.

Today, however, the series is often remembered as one of the most divisive chapters of Disney+’s live-action Star Wars era.

Why The Book of Boba Fett Failed With Viewers

The Disney+ strategy began on a high note with The Mandalorian in 2019. The show quickly became a cultural phenomenon and helped convince many fans that streaming would play a central role in the future of the franchise. Subsequent projects produced more uneven results.

Series such as Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), Ahsoka (2023), and The Acolyte (2024) generated mixed reactions, while even The Mandalorian‘s third season failed to unite audiences in the same way as its predecessors. Although critically acclaimed productions like Andor (2022) and Skeleton Crew (2024) earned praise, concerns surrounding Star Wars television never fully disappeared.

Many fans point to The Book of Boba Fett as the moment those concerns first emerged. The series followed Boba Fett, portrayed by Temuera Morrison, as he attempted to transform himself from feared bounty hunter into the ruler of Tatooine’s criminal underworld.

Given the character’s popularity and mysterious legacy, expectations were enormous. However, the reactions to the finished product proved far more divided.

Criticism frequently centered on the show’s creative direction and characterization. Other viewers questioned the decision to devote a significant portion of the story to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, causing the series to feel at times like an extension of The Mandalorian rather than a standalone production.

Despite ongoing discussion about the character’s future, there are currently no indications that a second season is in development.

Morrison recently stated that Lucasfilm has not approached him about another appearance, suggesting that Boba Fett remains absent from the studio’s immediate plans. The character also did not feature in The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026).

Boba Fett Will Return, but Not on Disney+

That does not mean The Book of Boba Fett is disappearing entirely.

Marvel Comics has announced a new adaptation of the Disney+ series, bringing the story into comic-book form. The project will run for seven issues, beginning on September 9, 2026. But rather than expanding the narrative, the comic will simply revisit it. Each issue adapts one episode of the series, offering readers a print version of the events already seen on Disney+.

Meanwhile, Star Wars continues searching for its next major success story.

The Mandalorian & Grogu opened to $98.1 million over Memorial Day weekend, the franchise’s lowest opening since Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). The film has earned $315.1 million worldwide so far against a reported $165 million budget.

Whether Boba Fett eventually returns to live action remains unknown, but his Disney+ adventure is about to find a new audience in comic shops.
