‘Star Wars’ Confirms Mark Hamill Is Officially Back as Luke Skywalker
Earlier this year, Mark Hamill, who has played the iconic Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker in Star Wars since 1977, told ComicBook.com that he’s unlikely to return to the faraway galaxy. “Listen, I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the days,” he said, adding that he “never expected it to become a permanent franchise.”
He added, “I had my time, you know, I’m appreciative of that. But I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.” He then joked about his exit in Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi (2017), saying, “By the way, when I disappeared [in The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind, and there’s no way I’m appearing as a naked Force Ghost.”
Of course, Hamill briefly reprised his role as a Force Ghost in the latest film, Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019), and has since made cameos outside the films as a de-aged version of Luke in The Mandalorian Season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett (2021).
However, while de-aging technology isn’t going anywhere, meaning Hamill could easily slip back into the Jedi robes at any time — especially in The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026), which hits theaters next May — it’s worth pointing out that he’s now in his early ’70s.
He could return as a Force Ghost in the post-sequel trilogy film that’s reportedly still in the works, but he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023 that he doesn’t “have any expectations of that happening”. These comments echoed remarks made by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who had already told IGN that Luke’s future is “uncertain”.

Outside The Mandalorian & Grogu and the untitled Rey film, there’s little space for Hamill to return — at least on the big screen. The only other upcoming Star Wars film that has a release date is Starfighter; however, it takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker.
Fortunately, Hamill continues to voice a Multiversal version of Luke Skywalker in the LEGO Star Wars side of the franchise, having done so last year in the four-part miniseries LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy. Now, he’s set to return in the follow-up, Pieces of the Past.
The project was officially announced during Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo, Japan earlier this year. Alongside Hamill, the new series also sees the return of Gaten Matarazzo (Sig Greebling), Tony Revolori (Darth Dev), Bobby Moynihan (Jedi Bob), Marsai Martin (Yesi Scala), Michael Cusack (Servo), Ahmed Best (Darth Jar Jar), Ahsoka Tano voice actor Ashley Eckstein as a “BrickHeadz” version of the character, Ben Schwartz as Jaxxon the Lepi, and Dan Stevens as Solitus.
