Snoop Dogg’s Anti-Gay ‘Lightyear’ Criticism Revives Chris Evans’ Blunt Comments
For years, Pixar has been at the forefront of animated filmmaking, creating iconic movies that capture the hearts of audiences worldwide. Yet, in recent years, the studio has faced challenges, particularly when it comes to box office performance. Despite the success of Inside Out 2 in 2024, Pixar’s track record in the past few years has been more hit or miss.
A significant flop was the 2022 release of Lightyear, a film that not only failed to perform at the box office but also became the subject of controversy due to its LGBTQIA representation.

Despite the critical backlash and financial losses that came with Lightyear, the film has found itself in the headlines again, this time thanks to the rapper Snoop Dogg. Recently, Snoop spoke out about taking his grandchildren to see the film, and his criticism of its LGBTQIA themes has ignited a new wave of debate about representation in media.
Snoop Dogg’s recent comments about Lightyear have raised eyebrows, particularly given his vocal criticism of the film’s LGBTQIA inclusion. Speaking about the movie in a viral clip, the rapper expressed his discomfort with the way the film showcased a lesbian couple, prompting questions from his grandson.

According to Snoop, his grandson was confused by the idea of a woman having a child with another woman.
“They’re like, ‘She had a baby — with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’”
“Oh s**t, I didn’t come in for this s**t. I just came to watch the go***mn movie.’ ‘They just said, she and she had a baby — they’re both women. How does she have a baby?’”
“It f***ed me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s**t that I don’t have an answer for… It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

As his comments went viral, it didn’t take long for the controversy surrounding Lightyear to resurface, and with it, the comments of Chris Evans, the voice actor behind Buzz Lightyear in the film. Evans, who had defended the film’s LGBTQIA portrayal when it was first released, once again found himself in the spotlight.
In a 2022 interview with Reuters Films, Evans addressed the backlash surrounding the inclusion of a gay couple in the film. At the time, he strongly condemned the critics, calling them “idiots.”
“The real truth is those people are idiots. Every time there’s been social advancement as we wake up, the American story, the human story is one of constant social awakening and growth and that’s what makes us good.”
“There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

Evans’ comments, which were initially made to defend Lightyear‘s LGBTQIA inclusivity, have since resurfaced in the wake of Snoop Dogg’s remarks. Evans’ response to the critics now seems even more relevant, given the ongoing cultural conversations about LGBTQIA representation in the media and its impact on children.
The conflict has also highlighted Snoop Dogg’s past, as he now finds himself at the center of a new controversy. In an ironic twist, clips from the rapper’s past surfaced, showing him appearing in an episode of the popular TV show The L Word in 2004. The show, which focused on the lives of lesbians and bisexuals in Los Angeles, was groundbreaking for its portrayal of LGBTQIA characters.
Fans have since pointed out the hypocrisy in Snoop’s recent stance against LGBTQIA representation in media, given his previous involvement with a show that promoted LGBTQIA visibility.
Experts have long argued that excluding such representation can make it seem as though there is something wrong with LGBTQIA individuals. Many supporters of inclusion believe that films like Lightyear are vital in showing children healthy relationships between consenting adults, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.
As the world continues to evolve, the conversation surrounding LGBTQIA representation in the media will undoubtedly grow. But as Evans noted, progress often comes with resistance from those who are uncomfortable with change. The challenge lies in embracing that growth and using it to create a more inclusive and understanding society.
