Tis the season to be jolly….and Mickey is on his way to help you do just that! A brand new Holiday special is coming your way from Mickey and friends. The new special, Mickey Saves Christmas, is sure to be an instant hit with audiences of all ages as it harkens back to the Christmas specials of days gone by.
With its stop motion animation style, young and young-at-heart alike will appreciate this new adventure. The style harkens back to classics like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Clause is Coming to Town, and The Year Without Christmas making stop motion intrinsically tied to Christmas.
“There’s something magical to stop-motion animation,” says David H. Brooks, the director of the special, “Like, ‘Wow, did they have to build all those little sets? And how did they get that [character] to do that? That’s the really fun thing: seeing the fingerprint of the artist, seeing the performance of the stop-motion puppet [created] through an animator’s hands. Stop-motion creates something invisible and magical and tangible that I don’t know that we can really put our fingers on.”
The film has all of the ingredients of an instant holiday classic- music, hijinx, snow, friendship, a storybook perfect setting, and of course Santa himself! In the new special, Mickey, Minnie and their pals attempt to celebrate the perfect Christmas at their snowy cabin but when Pluto causes Santa to lose all the presents on his sleigh, the friends have to act fast as they travel to the North Pole on a quest to save Christmas. In true holiday special style, they may just discover much more than they set out to– the true meaning of Christmas!
Mickey Saves Christmas will air simultaneously on ABC, The Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and Disney XD on November 27, 2022, and will be available to stream on Disney+ the day after. To make the feature even more exciting, this will be the first TV special produced by Disney Television Animation to air on ABC since 1999. It will also be the first Mickey Mouse animation in stop motion.
