Rumors of a Back to the Future Part 4 have circled for years, with fans wondering if Marty McFly and Doc Brown might someday return to the big screen. Recently, director Robert Zemeckis addressed the speculation in a conversation with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, putting to rest any lingering hope for a new film. Despite persistent fan interest—and even some encouragement from the original cast—Zemeckis confirmed that there are no plans for a sequel or reboot.
The original Back to the Future trilogy, which concluded in 1990 with Back to the Future Part III, left an indelible mark on pop culture. Since then, director and writer Robert Zemeckis, along with writer and producer Bob Gale, have consistently rejected the idea of revisiting the series. However, that hasn’t stopped speculation. Over the years, fans have floated ideas for another film, with actor Tom Holland of Spider-Man: No Way Home fame often mentioned as a possible new Marty McFly. But Zemeckis and Gale remain firm—there’s no Part 4 in the works.

Interestingly, original cast members Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly) and Christopher Lloyd (Doc Emmett Brown) have been more open to the idea of returning. While Fox, in an interview with Variety last year, said, “Do what you want, it’s your movie—I got paid already.” Lloyd has expressed interest in reprising his role as Doc, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, “I would love to do Doc again, no question.”
Both actors have, however, suggested that a female-led reboot could be an intriguing new take on the story, though they leave the decision in the hands of Zemeckis and Gale.
While a new film seems off the table, the Back to the Future franchise has continued in other forms. The story has been explored through Back to the Future: The Animated Series (1991), “Back to the Future: The Video Game” (2010), and Back to the Future: The Musical, which has found success in the West End, on Broadway, and in tours across North America. Fans also enjoyed a long-running comic book series from IDW Publishing, which added to the franchise’s enduring legacy.
Despite the ongoing interest, Zemeckis made it clear that a fourth movie is not in the cards. Speaking with Horowitz, he said, “We always felt that this was enough and that it had to just live with it being the three movies.” He also explained that the musical version of Back to the Future isn’t a reboot or remake, but rather “a celebration of the movie.”
When Horowitz asked if Universal Pictures still approaches him about a sequel, Zemeckis confirmed that while they occasionally bring it up, his response remains the same: Back to the Future Part 4 “just isn’t in the cards.”
