Rise of the Resistance Moving to Standby Queue at Disneyland

Back in 2019, Walt Disney World opened its most technologically advanced attraction to date — Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. The same ride opened at Disneyland just one month later and fans quickly descended upon the Parks, hoping to get their chance to be a part of the Resistance. In order to help control crowds, both Disneyland and Disney World used a virtual queue system, and only Guests that were given a boarding group were able to ride the attraction.

The boarding groups and virtual queue system remained in place at Walt Disney World until September 2021. In September, Disney announced that it would be eliminating the virtual queue for Rise of the Resistance and would be converting to the traditional standby queue. That happened just weeks before the new Disney Genie and Genie+ system launched at the Resort.

Disney Genie+ allows Guests to book front-of-the-line “Lightning Lane” access to certain rides right on their phone. However, Rise of the Resistance was categorized as an “individual attraction selection”, which means that Guests who want to skip the line must pay an additional fee that is not included with Disney Genie+. The cost of Lightning Lane access for Rise of the Resistance will vary on the time of year and also the day of the week.

Disney Genie+ has not yet launched at Disneyland Resort, but Disney has announced that Rise of the Resistance will be using the standby queue beginning on Monday, November 22, leading many to believe that Disney Genie and Genie+ will launch at the Happiest Place on Earth in just a matter of weeks. The move to the standby queue was announced by The Orange County Register, who reported:

Disneyland will begin the day with standby queue access for Rise of the Resistance and the park could potentially activate the virtual queue on certain days and times.

The twice-a-day distribution of virtual queue boarding group return times for the Rise of the Resistance attraction at 7 a.m. and noon each day through the Disneyland mobile app will be paused during the test.

Disneyland visitors are encouraged to check the Disneyland mobile app prior to 7 a.m. before arriving at the park and throughout the day to see if Rise of the Resistance is using a standby or virtual queue.

During the test, the Rise of the Resistance virtual queue could be activated on select days and times. If activated, visitors will need to be inside Disneyland to access the Rise of the Resistance virtual queue. Previously, the Rise of the Resistance virtual queue could be accessed anywhere — at Disneyland, DCA, Downtown Disney or from home or a hotel.

A couple of months ago, Disneyland Resort also eliminated the virtual queue for its newest attractions WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure, so no rides at either Disneyland or Disneyland California Adventure require a boarding group to ride. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure at EPCOT in Walt Disney World is the only ride at the Florida theme park that requires a boarding group to ride.

It is important to note that Disney has not yet announced an official launch of Disney Genie at Disneyland Resort. They have only said that the planning tool and accompanying Genie+ will be coming soon.

Are you excited to see Disneyland get rid of the Rise of the Resistance virtual queue?
