Producer Jerry Bruckheimer Hits the Red Carpet After Confirming New ‘Pirates 6’ Reboot
Veteran filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer made an appearance on the red carpet during the premiere of his newest film shortly after confirming the upcoming reboot of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
A Red Carpet Premiere in New York
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced all of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean films, as well as Tom Cruise’s TopGun films, spent Monday evening on the red carpet at the premiere of his new film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which is based on the 2014 novel Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII by Damien Lewis, at the AMC Lincoln Square in Manhattan.
The 80-year-old producer wore a big smile as he took to the red carpet alongside his wife, Linda. He also wore a dark blue dress shirt with no tie and a black suit and pants.
During the evening’s premiere, Bruckheimer also posed with the stars of the Ungentlemanly Warfare film, including Cary Elwes, Henry Zaga, Babs Olusanmokun, Eiza Gonzalez Rivera, Henry Golding, Hero F. Tiffin, and Henry Cavill.
On the Heels of a Massive Announcement
Bruckheimer’s public appearance comes just weeks after Bruckheimer confirmed the next Pirates of the Caribbean film, the sixth in the Disney franchise, will be a reboot.
Bruckheimer, who now has more than 110 film and television credits under his belt, only recently revealed that the upcoming sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film in Disney’s franchise will be a reboot.
When asked when fans might expect a new film in the franchise–or another TopGun movie–Bruckheimer gave an answer that left some wondering what it might mean about the potential for Johnny Depp’s return as Captain Jack Sparrow.
“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know,” Bruckheimer said before continuing and referencing actor Tom Cruise. “You don’t know how they come together. With Top Gun, you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you.”
“But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors,” he said.
An Uncertain Future for Johnny Depp & the Franchise
Margot Robbie (Barbie, 2023) had been attached to a potential reboot that would have reportedly featured a female-led story, but in 2022, she told Vanity Fair that Disney had chosen not to move forward with that project.
“We had an idea, and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” said Robbie.
The sixth installment in the wildly successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise reportedly changed hands several times following the debut of the fifth film, Dead Men Tell No Tales. Because of this, writer Craig Mazin and co-writer Ted Elliott ultimately sold Disney on their version of the soon-to-be-created sixth Pirates film.
“‘We pitched it and thought, ‘there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird,'” said Mazin. “And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script, and the strike happened, and everyone’s waiting around.”
For now, fans will still have to wait to find out whether Johnny Depp will reprise his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow. But many have already made it undeniably clear that any attempt by Walt Disney Pictures to make a Pirates film sans Depp would be a fool’s errand.
