Sebastian Stan is a Romanian-American actor best known for his role as Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Stan’s work with Marvel has been an integral part of the MCU, carrying earlier phases of the popular franchise through detailed stories of espionage and murder. Although side Anthony Mackie, Stan’s latest MCU appearances have come on Disney+ in 2021’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The Gossip Girl (2007) actor made his Marvel debut alongside Chris Evans (Stever Rogers) in 2011, bringing the long-time friend of Captain America, Bucky Barnes, to life for fans of the MCU in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Since Bucky, better known as The Winter Soldier, has been woken into the fabric of the subsidiary plots of the MCU. As a trained agent, Sebastian Stan’s character was responsible for the deaths of Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr) parents, ultimately leading to a split of the famous Avengers in Civil War (2016).

As his Disney+ show with Anthony Mackie, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will not renew for a second season, most assumed that Bucky, who can be seen in Infinity War (2018) alongside Rocket and Groot, would return for the next Captain America film, A Brave New World.

However, according to Culture Crave, it seems that may not be happening. In a recent interview with Radio Times, Mackee let lose that Sebastian Stan, who has worked on projects outside of Marvel, like Pam & Tommy (2022), I, Tonya (2017), and The Martian (2015), would not be returning to the Captain America franchise.

Sebastian Stan, despite his popularity in the MCU, has been hard at work in Hollywood. Most notably, Stan played the controversial role of Tommy Lee in the epic series that exposed the details behind an infamously leaked tape. However, the Marvel actor has also taken on more serious roles in films like Fresh (2022), A Different Man (2024), and a stent on Once Upon a Time (2011-2018).

Mackee, who remains close to Sebastian Stan, told Radio Times the following regarding any Bucky Barnes in future Falcon and the Winter Soldier projects:

“When they decided to go back to the movies, it is what it is, but I don’t have my friends anymore, so it kind of dampens it a little bit.”

Fans were quick to point out that they felt they had missed the best of Bucky in the MCU, the character who has existed in the films for over ten years and is integral to deep-running storylines and backstories, leaving some fans confused as to why he couldn’t return to the next Captain America movie, a place where he seems to fit perfectly, especially considering that Sam has now taken up the shield, and will need help carrying on Cap’s legacy.

Although the news stinks for Marvel fans, for film fans of Sebastian Stan, there’s still plenty of him to go around. Promoting his new film, A Different Man, a horror/drama featuring Adam Pearson, Stan made waves in February when he called out a reporter that referred to Adam Pearson’s, who has Neurofibromatosis Type 1, character as a “monster.”

As for the MCU, Brave New World is expected to debut in 2025, and although it seems like Sebastian Stan will not be a part of this next adventure, he is still expected to show up in the Thunderbolts, which is expected to debut in the same year.
