Pixar’s Most Debated Film of the Year Just Got a Home Release Date

Pixar just announced the home release dates for Hoppers, and if you have been waiting to watch the film that generated more conversation before it even hit theaters than almost any animated release in recent memory, the wait is almost over. The digital release date is April 28, which is this week, and the Blu-ray follows on June 2. A Disney+ streaming date has not been announced, so anyone who wants to watch Hoppers at home in the immediate window will need to purchase it rather than wait for it to appear on the streaming service.

The Dates and What They Mean for The Flim

Digital on April 28 puts Hoppers in living rooms almost immediately after its theatrical run wraps up, a faster turnaround than some recent Pixar releases have seen. The June 2 Blu-ray gives physical media fans a complete home release package with behind-the-scenes content for anyone who wants to dig into the production. The absence of a Disney+ date is the detail worth noting for streaming-first households. If you are not planning to purchase the film outright, there is currently no confirmed timeline for when it will be available to stream as part of a subscription.

What Hoppers Is

Hoppers stars Piper Curda as Mabel, a 19-year-old college student whose mind hops into a robot beaver. Bobby Moynihan voices King George, and Jon Hamm plays Jerry Generazzo. The film arrived in theaters earlier this year with a nearly perfect 97 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it among Pixar’s strongest critical showings in recent memory and generating real enthusiasm from critics who had been watching the studio navigate a complicated few years of mixed commercial results.

The Story Behind the Film

Hoppers did not arrive without context. Pixar has spent the last several years dealing with an audience that grew increasingly uncertain about the studio’s creative direction following the commercial disappointments of Lightyear in 2022 and Elio in 2025. Both films sparked debate about their messaging, overshadowing the stories themselves, and yielded box-office results that reflected genuine audience hesitation. Inside Out 2 demonstrated that the audience was still there when the film connected broadly, but the pressure on Pixar’s original concepts was real heading into Hoppers.

Reports surfaced before the film’s release that earlier versions carried more prominent environmentalist themes that were scaled back during production, with the creative focus shifted more squarely onto character-driven storytelling. Story adjustments during animated film development are common and happen for a range of reasons, but in Pixar’s current cultural context, the reports generated their own layer of conversation before anyone had seen the finished film. The 97 percent critical score suggested the adjustments, whatever their origin, produced something that worked.

The Art of Hoppers Book

Disney Books recently previewed The Art of Hoppers, a new entry in the collectible Art of series that covers Disney and Pixar animated films. The book includes character designs, storyboards, color scripts, and exclusive interviews with the creative team, along with behind-the-scenes details about the making of the film. For Pixar fans and aspiring animators who want to understand how Hoppers was built from concept to finished product, the Art of book is the kind of companion piece the studio’s most dedicated audience has consistently responded to.

Hoppers goes digital on April 28. Blu-ray arrives June 2. Disney+ date is still pending.
