‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ Seemingly Gets Development Suspended

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 6 continues to drift through uncertain waters, with new rumors suggesting that while development is ongoing, momentum may not be as strong as fans once expected.

Nearly a decade after the release of Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017, the future of the blockbuster franchise remains unsettled. Audiences have long awaited clarity on the next chapter—particularly whether Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow will return. While fresh casting speculation points to a potentially ambitious new direction, shifting priorities behind the scenes may have quietly slowed the film’s progress.

When Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl premiered in 2003, it redefined what a theme park adaptation could achieve. The film launched a global franchise, anchored largely by Johnny Depp’s eccentric and unpredictable Captain Jack Sparrow.

As the series expanded, characters like Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner—portrayed by Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom—became central to its appeal. Together, the films generated billions at the global box office, securing Pirates of the Caribbean as one of Disney’s most valuable live-action brands.

But the series’ future became complicated in the wake of Depp’s legal disputes. Following highly publicized court cases, Disney distanced itself from the actor. Although Depp ultimately won his U.S. defamation case in 2022, his relationship with the studio remains strained. The actor has also indicated reluctance to return under the conditions surrounding his exit.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has repeatedly confirmed that a new installment is in development, though specifics remain under wraps. Orlando Bloom has acknowledged conversations about reprising his role, but no official announcements have followed.

Behind closed doors, Disney has reportedly explored multiple approaches. At one stage, a spinoff led by Margot Robbie was in active development, though that concept now appears to have been shelved as the studio reassesses its broader strategy.

More recently, attention has turned to a new rumor: that the next chapter could center on Jack Sparrow’s son. If true, this would signal a generational shift for the franchise, introducing a new protagonist while maintaining ties to its origins.

Some reports indicate that an initial film could act as a bridge, incorporating legacy characters before transitioning fully to a younger cast in subsequent installments. Even as these creative ideas evolve, another major factor may be influencing Pirates 6 behind the scenes.

Bruckheimer, who also produces the Top Gun series, previously highlighted scheduling challenges between the two franchises. At the time, he suggested that the projects were effectively competing for attention. “According to Bruckheimer, Pirates 6 is currently competing directly with another major sequel project he’s producing: Top Gun 3,” Inside the Magic previously reported. “He described it as ‘a horse race,’ saying Top Gun is ‘a hair ahead’ right now.”

That competition now appears to have a clear frontrunner. At this year’s CinemaCon, Top Gun 3 was officially confirmed to be moving forward with Tom Cruise. With the Paramount sequel gaining traction, it’s likely that resources and focus are shifting in that direction.

For Pirates of the Caribbean 6, that could translate to slower development—or even a temporary pause as priorities realign. The question of Johnny Depp’s return remains unresolved. While Bruckheimer has expressed interest in bringing the actor back, Disney has not made any definitive commitments.

At the same time, the rumored emphasis on a younger lead suggests the studio may be preparing for a future less dependent on Sparrow as the central figure.

Disney’s recent box office performance has also influenced its approach to large-scale productions. With increasing scrutiny around big-budget investments, the studio faces added pressure to ensure that any new Pirates installment resonates with audiences.

Blending established characters with new ones could provide a viable path forward, but it’s a strategy that carries inherent challenges. Rely too heavily on nostalgia, and the franchise risks feeling repetitive. Shift too far toward reinvention, and it could lose the elements that made it successful.

For now, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 remains in development—but not necessarily advancing at full speed. With Top Gun 3 taking priority and creative decisions still in flux, the franchise appears to be waiting for the right moment to move forward. Whether that includes Jack Sparrow, a next-generation protagonist, or an entirely new direction remains to be seen.

One thing is certain: the story of Pirates of the Caribbean is far from over, even if its next chapter has yet to fully take shape.
