In 2020, Disney announced that it was rebooting the popular young adult book series, Percy Jackson. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was a film released by 20th Century Fox in 2013, starring Logan Lerman as the young Greek demigod. A sequel — Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters — was released in 2013, but the film did not perform well, and the franchise ended. Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019 and now owns the rights to both films.

Disney’s new fantasy series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, premiered on Disney+ on December 19, 2023, starring Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson. Leah Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri portray Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood, Percy’s best friends, respectively. The first season of the show revolved around the first book in the Rick Riordan series, The Lightning Thief. Percy and his friends must find Zeus’ thunderbolt in order to restore order and prevent a war among the gods.
The new Disney+ fantasy series fared much better than its film predecessors. The first episode of Percy Jackson amassed an astonishing 13.3 million views in the days immediately following its release. That made it the best premiere for any Disney Branded Television show ever! In February, Disney announced that Percy Jackson and his friends would be returning for a second season.
Unfortunately, it looks like that second season won’t be coming as soon as fans were hoping.

According to an update from Rick Riordan, season two of Percy Jackson will not start filming until the fall at the earliest. Riordan is writing and executive producing the series. He said that he has created an eight-episode outline, which is now being turned into full episodes. He said half of the scripts are written, and the other half are in active development.
The first season of Percy Jackson began filming in June 2022 and wrapped up filming in February 2023. The show did not premiere for another ten months. If season two films for just as long and takes as long to complete, it’s likely the second season will not premiere until late 2025.
At this time, we do not have any major casting news regarding season 2. We do know that Walker Scobell, Leah Jeffries, and Aryan Simhardi will be returning. Riordan confirmed the return of the “core team” and said that they were excited to be back.
We also know that season two will revolve around the events of the second book in the series, Sea of Monsters.
Disney Dining will update readers when we learn more about the highly anticipated second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
