Disney fans everywhere are undoubtedly excited, as a new stage show featuring the Disney villains was announced earlier this week for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. However, it might come at the cost of more than just Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy.

A vibrant, theatrical stage is adorned with various framed pictures of characters in dynamic poses. The centerpiece features a figure on stage, dramatically lit, with an enthusiastic audience watching from below. Colorful lights and dramatic shadows enhance the scene in this New Villains Show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

At the time of writing, Disney is truly riding a villainous hype train as Walt Disney World prepares for the eventual opening of its new park expansion. However, it seems that they won’t just be taking up residence in Cinderella’s backyard at the Magic Kingdom.

The new stage show will be taking the place of the Cars-inspired attraction, much to the thrill and delight of an audience of hard-core fans, That said, what these same fans might not realize is that Hollywood Studios is also running out of space for the Monsters Inc. coaster, leaving only one piece of valuable real estate left.

Kermit the Frog stands in the foreground of an ornate theater with a black-and-white Muppet*Vision scene playing on the big screen behind him. He appears thoughtful with his hand to his chin. The theater is empty and elaborately decorated.

It’s no secret that Disney’s cast of eclectic evil-doers has created one of the company’s most lucrative franchises. Viewers have adored and abhorred the Disney villains since Walt’s day, and that’s not going to change any time soon.

Many would agree that a touch of darkness in the Disney parks is long overdue, but should it come at the expense of a major piece of Disney history? Although nothing has been set in stone at this time, Muppet*Vision 3D has seemingly been under threat for a good while and as @mr.unofficialceo points out, the noose is beginning to tighten.

As he announces the excitement behind the upcoming Villains show, he also doesn’t neglect to mention that we might be getting one step closer to Muppet*Vision 3D shutting down in order to make room for a new wave of attractions.

This isn’t the first time the vintage attraction has been threatened with closure, but it’s something that seems more and more likely with each new addition to the park. However, there might be a glimmer of hope that keeps it alive as a part of Jim Henson’s legacy.

Disney acquired the Muppets in 2004, but their pop culture presents has been around since the ’60s. Disney’s partnership with Jim Henson Studios has done wonders for Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Peggy, Gonzo, and all the rest, but the Hollywood Studios attraction is one of the last projects Henson himself was personally involved in, making it a historic feature.

A report from Vulture recently revealed that fans of the ride and supporters of Henson and his estate are in the process of adding Muppet*Vision to the National Register of Historic Places. The article shared,

“For all its Muppety silliness and mirth, Muppet*Vision 3D is also a site of remembrance, and maybe even pilgrimage, because it was the final project Jim Henson directed before his death at age 53 in 1990. It was also one of his final performances as Kermit, as well as the Swedish Chef and Waldorf, the latter of which is rendered animatronically in the audience, roasting the show from his usual opera box. It’s already accepted practice for landmarks related to great artists and writers to be registered as official historic places, from Walden Pond to the Florida Keys’ Hemingway House to James Baldwin’s Upper West Side apartment building to, naturally, Walt Disney’s childhood home and the small garage that he used as his first makeshift animation studio.”

Disney fans are notorious for being overprotective of certain attractions, but Muppet*Vision 3D might be on the same level as Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. Both attractions were products of their time, yet they were instrumental in the careers of their respective creators.

While we can’t say what will happen at this time, there is some comfort in knowing that the attraction likely won’t go down anytime soon, regardless of the Villains’ expansion. In this writer’s opinion, the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular would be a much better location, especially with his arrival at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park.
