New ‘Star Wars’ Sequel Trilogy Gets First Official Trailer
Recently, fans were treated to the first official trailer for the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu. While many weren’t impressed — largely because of the reception of The Mandalorian Season 3, the “straight-to-streaming” look of the film, and the overall state of the franchise under Disney — another new Star Wars trailer has landed online.
Upcoming Star Wars Content — TV and Film
Star Wars has a lot of new content on the horizon in addition to The Mandalorian & Grogu, which hits theaters in May. Earlier this month, LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy — Pieces of the Past, the follow-up to last year’s miniseries, premiered on Disney+.
Beyond that, audiences can also expect the post-sequel era film Star Wars: Starfighter, which has Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) director Shawn Levy at the helm and Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) in the cockpit, to dock with theaters in May, 2027.

The Next Era of Star Wars in Film Is Unfocused
Other Star Wars movies are also reportedly in development, including the untitled Rey sequel starring Daisy Ridley. However, The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter are the only ones with release dates. Still there are no sequels — at least not on the big screen.
Despite following Season 3, The Mandalorian & Grogu is expected to be a standalone adventure, which means that audiences won’t need to watch the live-action Disney+ show ahead of the film’s release. And while Starfighter takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker (2019), that doesn’t mean it’s a sequel — it’s an entirely standalone story.
In film, this is the first time Star Wars has committed to standalone stories. Previously, we had the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, and the sequel trilogy. While Rogue One (2016) and Solo (2018) were anthology films, together they still formed part of the A Star Wars Story side of the franchise.
A New “Sequel Trilogy” Is Coming
There is, however, a set of three Star Wars sequels coming up. A “sequel trilogy”, if you will, from none other than Star Wars: Visions Volume 3.
Star Wars: Visions Volume One was a runaway hit for Disney and Lucasfilm. It debuted on Disney+ in 2021 to wide acclaim. Made up of nine episodes (produced by seven Japanese animation studios) — each of them independent and unrelated to one another or to the wider Star Wars franchise canon — the anime anthology series was praised for its striking visuals, darker storytelling, and ambition.
Volume 2 was released on Star Wars Day (May 4) in 2023, giving us another collection of nine unique stories set in the faraway galaxy.
Now, Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 will break new ground by featuring three sequels among its lineup. “The Duel: Payback”, “The Lost Ones”, and “The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope”, which are follow-ups to Volume 1‘s “The Duel”, “The Village Bride”, and “The Ninth Jedi”, respectively. Volume 3 Could Reignite Interest in Star Wars
Volume 3 looks absolutely breathtaking. So much, in fact, that it’s easy to forget we saw the trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu just a few days ago.
With the future of Star Wars on the big screen looking mixed (Starfighter is building a fair amount of hype but it seems a huge number of fans do not care about The Mandalorian & Grogu), could Disney+ become its savior, despite having saturated the franchise in recent years with the likes of The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, Andor, and The Acolyte, and not to mention all the animated shows, from The Bad Batch to Tales Of?
All nine episodes of Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 will premiere on October 29.
At Star Wars Celebration earlier this year, Lucasfilm announced a new spin-off series of Visions titled Star Wars: Visions Presents. The first installment will be The Ninth Jedi, a full series based on the Volume 1 episode of the same name.
While there’s no release date set, Star Wars: Visions Presents is expected to arrive in 2026.
