New Mister Fantastic Actor Has Been Confirmed for Marvel
Marvel Studios may have finally found the character who will help shape its next generation of storytelling.

After years of fan casting debates, online speculation, and endless discussions about who should portray Reed Richards, Pedro Pascal officially made his debut as Mister Fantastic in The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). The film not only introduced Marvel’s First Family to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but also positioned Reed Richards as a central figure in the franchise’s future.
For years, Reed Richards remained one of Marvel’s most heavily discussed uncast roles. Fans frequently suggested actors ranging from John Krasinski to numerous other Hollywood stars, hoping to see their preferred choice lead the Fantastic Four into the MCU.
While Krasinski briefly appeared as a variant of the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Marvel Studios ultimately selected Pascal as its long-term Reed Richards. The casting was officially confirmed through Marvel promotional artwork two years before the film’s release.

Already familiar to audiences through roles in The Mandalorian, The Last of Us, and Game of Thrones, Pascal entered the MCU carrying significant expectations. Marvel’s decision suggested confidence that the actor could balance Reed’s scientific genius with the emotional depth required for a character expected to guide future stories.
Joining Pascal in The Fantastic Four: First Steps were Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. The film embraced a retro-futuristic setting while delivering a story largely disconnected from the increasingly complex continuity of the wider MCU.
That approach arrived at a crucial time for Marvel Studios. Although the MCU remains one of Hollywood’s most successful franchises, recent years have produced inconsistent reactions from both audiences and critics. Films including Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and Thunderbolts* (2025) generated varying levels of success, leading to broader questions about Marvel’s direction following the Infinity Saga.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps helped answer some of those concerns. The movie exceeded expectations during its opening period and emerged as one of Marvel’s strongest-performing releases in recent years. It outpaced several recent MCU entries and earned comparisons to some of the superhero genre’s biggest releases.
Many industry observers pointed to the film’s accessibility as a major factor. Rather than relying heavily on years of interconnected storytelling, the movie functioned as a relatively self-contained adventure, making it easier for casual moviegoers to engage with the characters.
While Pascal’s version of Reed Richards is expected to lead Marvel’s cinematic future, another interpretation of the character has arrived for younger viewers. Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends has officially cast Mario Lopez as the voice of Reed Richards in a new collection of Disney Jr. shorts.
According to Marvel, via The Direct, Lopez’s character is “the leader of the Fantastic Four” who “uses his ingeniousness and stretching powers to tactfully help Team Spidey beat the baddies.” The role marks the latest screen incarnation of Mister Fantastic, though one designed specifically for preschool audiences.

Unlike many comic book portrayals that emphasize Reed’s complex intellect and leadership responsibilities, Spidey and His Amazing Friends presents a lighter interpretation of the hero. The shorts focus on his famous stretching abilities and his willingness to help Team Spidey overcome challenges.
The addition also reflects Marvel’s broader effort to introduce iconic characters to younger fans while increasing awareness of the Fantastic Four brand across multiple platforms.
As Marvel continues building toward its next major crossover events, Reed Richards appears poised to become increasingly important. The Fantastic Four are expected to play significant roles in Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), films that many believe will reshape the MCU’s future.
With Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., no longer part of the franchise and Steve Rogers, portrayed by Chris Evans, having stepped away from his leadership role, Reed Richards is frequently viewed as a natural candidate to become the MCU’s next guiding figure.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already signaled that major changes are planned following the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.
Speaking with Variety, Feige addressed speculation surrounding the franchise’s future direction. “Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline–we’re thinking along those lines […] X-Men is where that will happen next,” he said.
Rather than describing Marvel’s future as a complete restart, Feige suggested that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will serve as a bridge toward a new phase of storytelling.
Those comments echo observations made earlier this year by directors Joe and Anthony Russo. The filmmakers behind Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) indicated that while Endgame concluded one major chapter, the upcoming Avengers films are being developed as the beginning of another.
Among the most significant changes is Marvel’s shift away from Kang the Conqueror as the Multiverse Saga’s primary threat. Attention has instead turned to Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., who is expected to become a defining presence moving forward.

Meanwhile, Marvel continues laying the groundwork for the long-awaited introduction of the X-Men, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) remains scheduled for release in late July.
For Marvel Studios, The Fantastic Four: First Steps was more than the launch of a new superhero team. It introduced characters positioned to influence the MCU for years to come. At the center of those ambitions is Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, a hero Marvel appears to be counting on as it enters its next era.
